Fishing equipment for popper fishing
Fishing in the Andaman Islands is all about strong species like Giant Trevally, dogtooth tuna, and coral trout. Therefore, equipment that can withstand strong bites, high pressure, and long runs is needed.
Rods
Popping rods 7’6–8’6” in PE8–PE10. They should be able to handle casting weights of around 120–200 grams and a minimum of 10 kg of drag pressure. 3-piece rods are easy to travel with.
Reels
Robust spinning reel in size 10000–18000 with high gear ratio, good drag, and space for at least 200 meters of braided line.
Lines
Braided line 60–100 lb (PE8–PE10). Shock leader 170–220 lb monofilament, at least 150 cm.
Poppers and stickbaits
Poppers 100–200 grams that displace a lot of water. Stickbaits 15–25 cm in colors such as blue/silver, white/red, and pink.
Hooks and rig
Hooks in sizes 5/0–10/0 from BKK, Owner, Gamakatsu, or Decoy. Split rings and swivels should withstand at least 200 lb.
Jigging – quick facts
