How does fishing work on Hawkins Bank?

Hawkins Bank is one of the most famous areas around Rodrigues and a major reason why anglers travel here. Deep waters, strong currents, and structures that attract large predatory fish converge here.

The primary focus is on heavy jigging for dogtooth tuna, but the fishing varies depending on activity, currents, and weather. Some days involve intense fishing over deep ledges, while others combine jigging with trolling to locate fish.

When the fishing is at its best, bites can be brutal and without warning. It is this variation and the feeling that anything can bite that makes Rodrigues special for many sea anglers.

What does a hosted trip to Rodrigues Island involve?

On this hosted trip, you will travel with Douglas Dahlberg, a well-known figure in the Swedish sport fishing world with extensive experience in sea fishing and international fishing trips. He will be with you from the preparations at home in Sweden to the last day of fishing out at sea.

If you need support with equipment, technique, or how to best plan your fishing, he will be by your side all week. Many also appreciate the social aspect of traveling in a group with other sea anglers and sharing experiences both on the boat and after the day's fishing.

Who is Douglas Dahlberg

Douglas Dahlberg is an experienced angler with a strong background as a fishing guide and camp manager. After more than twelve years in Northern Norway, he has built up extensive knowledge in sea fishing and predator fishing, where large fish and demanding conditions have been a natural part of everyday life.

In addition to Nordic waters, Douglas has fished in destinations such as Madagascar, the Andaman Islands, the Maldives, Rodrigues Island, and Panama. The experiences from tropical fishing have given him broad knowledge of tackle, techniques, and what actually works when it matters.

Whether you need help with PE lines, jigs, reel sizes, or how the fishing usually works at a location, you can rely on Douglas's experience throughout your trip.

Fishing on Rodrigues Island

Rodrigues Island is a well-known destination for dogtooth tuna jigging, offering challenging yet highly rewarding offshore fishing. Here, you'll fish both around the island and out on Hawkins Bank, where the chance to encounter truly large fish is one of the major highlights.

The fishing is constantly adapted to the prevailing conditions. Some mornings begin with trolling to locate active fish, while on other days, the boat is already positioned over hot spots, allowing jigging to commence directly from the first drift.

During the day, fishing is primarily done by jigging over deep ledges and structures where predatory fish patrol. As evening approaches and fish often become most active, jigging tends to be at its hottest, especially when targeting large dogtooth tuna.

In addition to dogtooth tuna, species such as yellowfin tuna, sailfish, giant trevally (GT), snapper, grouper, and marlin can be found. The fishing is physically demanding and suits those seeking intense offshore fishing with great variety and the chance of landing truly heavy fish in the Indian Ocean.

Live in the heart of the fishing village

L'Oiseau des Îles II is a 53-foot boat built in Mauritius with a proven design for Indian Ocean conditions. It combines stability, performance, and comfort to create a safe and functional base during your fishing trip.

Onboard, there's a complete kitchen, a spacious seating area for meals, and three air-conditioned cabins with a total of eight berths. The boat also has a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and both bed linen and towels are included.

On the flybridge, there's a large lounge with ample seating, while the spacious aft deck provides room for up to five anglers simultaneously. It also features a fighting chair and plenty of space for battling larger fish.

The food onboard is of high quality, with a mix of local dishes and international favorites. Fresh fruit and fish are recurring features, and sometimes the crew offers carpaccio of freshly caught tuna for lunch. Water, soft drinks, juice, and alcoholic beverages are included during your time onboard.

fish species and bait choice

On Rodrigues Island, speed jigging is one of the most effective methods, and a large part of the fishing revolves around hunting predatory fish along deep drops, underwater mountains, and current-swept areas in the open ocean. Here, you have the opportunity to catch species such as dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, giant trevally (GT), amberjack, grouper, and coral trout.

Speed jigs between 200 and 400 grams are standard depending on depth, current, and drift. It is important to bring jigs of various shapes and weights to adapt your fishing to the conditions. Short and wider jigs with a lot of action can work well when the fish are more selective, while slimmer and faster-moving jigs often work better when predatory fish are active.

When it comes to equipment, heavy jigging combos are standard. For heavier fishing targeting large dogtooth tuna, rods paired with reels in sizes 10,000–20,000 are most common, preferably models with a low gear ratio that provide better power for heavy jigging and when larger fish need to be brought up from the depths. Lines in PE8–PE10 are often used for the heaviest setups, offering both strength and security when truly large fish strike.

For lighter jigging and smaller species, a more balanced setup with PE6 works very well, which also makes the fishing less physically demanding during long days at sea.

Varying between different jigs is often key to finding what works best on any given day. Colors like blue/silver, glow, pink, and natural baitfish patterns are proven favorites depending on depth and light conditions.

When fishing for large dogtooth tuna, much revolves around tempo and technique. Fast reeling stops combined with powerful lifts often trigger strikes, which can come brutally and without warning. It is a physical type of fishing where both equipment and angler are tested, but also fishing that can offer some of the hardest fights one can experience during a tropical fishing trip.

Before a fishing trip to Rodrigues Island

What fish species can be caught in Rodrigues?

Dogtooth tuna is the focus, but the variety is great. You also have the chance to catch yellowfin tuna, GT, amberjack, grouper, coral trout, snapper, sailfish, and marlin. What bites depends on the season, depth, and how the fishing is set up for the day.

When is the best time for a fishing trip to Rodrigues?

The fishing is good year-round and is rarely affected by the rainy season. If you want to maximize your chances for the big species, the high season is approximately November to May. Our fixed departures are scheduled for when the fishing is typically at its best.

How big does a dogtooth tuna get in Rodrigues?

Rodrigues and Hawkins Bank are known for really big dogtooth tuna. Here, there's a chance of fish weighing well over a hundred kilos, and it's precisely the possibility of that size that attracts big-game anglers here. How big a fish you encounter depends on the season, conditions, and luck, but the dream fish is definitely here.

How large is the group on a hosted trip?

You will be traveling in a smaller group of sea anglers with Douglas as your Swedish tour guide. The aft deck can accommodate up to five anglers simultaneously, ensuring everyone has plenty of space and fishing time during the days on board.

How do you fish on Rodrigues?

This is heavy fishing. Speed jigging with jigs weighing 200 to 400 grams for long days is demanding, and a large dogtooth tuna will test both you and your equipment.
