fish species and bait choice
On Rodrigues Island, speed jigging is one of the most effective methods, and a large part of the fishing revolves around hunting predatory fish along deep drops, underwater mountains, and current-swept areas in the open ocean. Here, you have the opportunity to catch species such as dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, giant trevally (GT), amberjack, grouper, and coral trout.
Speed jigs between 200 and 400 grams are standard depending on depth, current, and drift. It is important to bring jigs of various shapes and weights to adapt your fishing to the conditions. Short and wider jigs with a lot of action can work well when the fish are more selective, while slimmer and faster-moving jigs often work better when predatory fish are active.
When it comes to equipment, heavy jigging combos are standard. For heavier fishing targeting large dogtooth tuna, rods paired with reels in sizes 10,000–20,000 are most common, preferably models with a low gear ratio that provide better power for heavy jigging and when larger fish need to be brought up from the depths. Lines in PE8–PE10 are often used for the heaviest setups, offering both strength and security when truly large fish strike.
For lighter jigging and smaller species, a more balanced setup with PE6 works very well, which also makes the fishing less physically demanding during long days at sea.
Varying between different jigs is often key to finding what works best on any given day. Colors like blue/silver, glow, pink, and natural baitfish patterns are proven favorites depending on depth and light conditions.
When fishing for large dogtooth tuna, much revolves around tempo and technique. Fast reeling stops combined with powerful lifts often trigger strikes, which can come brutally and without warning. It is a physical type of fishing where both equipment and angler are tested, but also fishing that can offer some of the hardest fights one can experience during a tropical fishing trip.

This is heavy fishing. Speed jigging with jigs weighing 200 to 400 grams for long days is demanding, and a large dogtooth tuna will test both you and your equipment. You don't need to be an elite athlete, but a basic level of fitness will make the trip more enjoyable. If you want to take it easy, the day can be broken up with trolling.
