fish species and bait choice
Fishing at Camp Isua revolves around sea-run Arctic char, one of Greenland's most sought-after sport fish. The char here are extremely strong, explosive, and often in very good condition thanks to the cold, nutrient-rich waters. The fish migrate from the sea up into the rivers and can occur in large quantities, providing intense and visual fly fishing.
For fly fishing, nymphs, streamers, and dry flies are primarily used. Color choices such as pink, purple, red, orange, and chartreuse are classic and very effective in these rivers. Heavily weighted nymphs are fished deep in fast-flowing sections, while lighter streamers and foam flies are used in calmer waters, pools, and lake outlets. Dry fly fishing with foam flies is often one of the absolute highlights of the trip, where the char explosively attack the fly on the surface.
Spin fishing also works very well, especially with spinners and spoons in bright colors. Single hooks and barbless hooks are mandatory for all fishing. Lure selection and technique are adjusted daily according to water levels, temperature, and fish behavior, and our guides will help you choose the right method for each river and situation.

What fish species are found in Greenland?
What fish species are found in Greenland?
In Greenland, sea-run Arctic char is by far the most common and sought-after sport fish species, especially in the rivers around Camp Isua. The Arctic char is known for its strength, explosive takes, and long runs, making it a fantastic sport fish for both fly and spin fishing.
In addition to Arctic char, sea trout are also found in some areas, but fishing in this region is primarily focused on Arctic char. During your stay, there is also the opportunity to cast a few lines in the sea. There, you have the chance to hook species such as spotted wolffish and halibut, which adds an extra dimension to the fishing trip.

The best time for a fishing trip to Greenland is from mid-July to early September. During this period, sea-run arctic char migrate up the rivers, providing intense and high-quality fishing in Isua, Eqaluit, and Ilivertallip Kuua.
July often offers large numbers of fish that have just entered the rivers, with aggressive strikes and strong fights.

Facts about the country
Facts about the country
Greenland is the world's largest island and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The country is an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark and is known for its untouched nature, vast fjords, glaciers, and wilderness. Despite its size, only about 56,000 inhabitants live here, mainly along the coasts.
The capital is Nuuk and is the hub for air travel, shipping, and administration. Greenland has an Arctic climate with cool summers and cold winters, which creates unique conditions for fishing, hunting, and outdoor life. The landscape is dominated by mountains, rivers, and ice, and large parts of the country are completely uninhabited.
For anglers, Greenland is one of the world's most exclusive destinations, particularly known for fishing for sea-run Arctic char in pristine rivers. The combination of low exploitation, strong fish stocks, and magnificent nature makes Greenland a unique destination for fishing trips.
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Yes. Camp Isua has WiFi via Starlink satellite internet. The connection is unusually stable for being so far out in the Greenlandic wilderness and makes it possible to stay in touch with the outside world, send messages, manage emails, and share pictures from your fishing trip.
Keep in mind that the connection may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, but compared to traditional solutions in remote areas, Starlink works very well.
How do you fish in Greenland?
How do you fish in Greenland?
Fishing in Greenland primarily takes place in rivers and lakes, with a focus on sea-run Arctic char. It's an active and visual form of fishing in crystal-clear water, where you often see the fish before it bites. Both fly fishing and spin fishing are used, but fly fishing is the most common method in the rivers around Camp Isua.
For fly fishing, nymphs, streamers, and dry flies are used depending on water levels, temperature, and where the fish are located. In flowing sections, heavier nymphs or streamers are often used, while dry flies and lighter presentations work well in calmer pools and lake outlets. Spin fishing is done with spinners and spoons, always with single, barbless hooks according to local regulations.
In Greenland, we primarily practice catch and release, but a limited number of Arctic char are harvested for food at the camp. This is done in a controlled and sustainable manner, with great respect for the fish stocks and nature. The fish is prepared by our chefs and served fresh, often on the same day, providing an authentic taste of Greenland and becoming a cherished part of the experience.
This means you get to experience both world-class sport fishing and the genuine feeling of eating local fish in the heart of the Greenlandic wilderness.
How are the weather and climate?
How are the weather and climate?
The weather and climate in Greenland are an important part of the experience and affect both the fishing and the stay at the camp. During the fishing season, which runs from mid-July to early September, it is Arctic summer with long, bright days and midnight sun during parts of the period.
The temperature is usually between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, but can change rapidly. Sunny, clear days can feel surprisingly warm, while sudden changes in weather with wind, fog, and rain can occur. It is precisely this variation that makes Greenland feel alive and authentic, and contributes to the sense of wilderness.
Wind plays a significant role and can affect both boat transfers and fishing in the rivers, but our guides always adapt the day's plan to the prevailing conditions. With the right clothing, the climate is very pleasant for active fishing, and the cool temperatures allow you to fish long sessions without getting exhausted.
