Fishing in Montenegro

Fly fishing in Montenegro offers varied fishing in some of Europe's most interesting rivers. During the trip, you'll mainly fish in the Tara and Lim, two of the country's most famous waters, but also in smaller rivers where fishing pressure is low and the experience more personal.

In the Tara, you'll encounter clear, flowing water that's perfect for dry flies and nymphs. The Lim offers more variety, where you can fish for trout, grayling, and huchen in both calmer sections and more turbulent stretches.

The fishing season in Montenegro spans a large part of the year. For trout and grayling, June to September is the best period, when insect life is active and fishing is at its liveliest. This is when you'll experience classic fly fishing with rising fish and beautiful presentations.

For those who want to fish for huchen, October to February is the right time. They are then fished with larger flies and more active fishing, often in deeper parts of the rivers.

What makes Montenegro a strong destination for fly fishing in Europe is the combination of several rivers, different species, and the ability to tailor the trip to the season and what you want to experience.

Fishing Packages in Montenegro

We offer two different fishing packages to Montenegro, where you get to experience the country's most famous rivers and waters. Regardless of whether you choose 4 or 6 fishing days, you will get a trip with good variety and the opportunity to fish in several different locations.

A large part of the experience is the Lim River. It flows from Lake Plav and offers excellent fishing for trout, grayling, and huchen. Here you fish in varied currents where dry flies, nymphs, and streamers all work depending on the conditions.

In addition to the larger rivers, you will also fish in smaller, more secluded waters. It is often here you get the feeling of being completely alone, with nature around you and fish that are not accustomed to heavy pressure.

Montenegro is also an affordable option for those looking for fly fishing in Europe. The combination of several rivers, varied fishing, and genuine surroundings makes it a destination that many return to.

Accommodation in Montenegro

During your fishing trip in Montenegro, you will stay in selected accommodations that suit the group and the trip's setup. These can be cabins or apartments, depending on whether you are two people or a larger group.

Common to all accommodations is that they are fresh, comfortable, and located close to the fishing waters. You avoid long transfers and can instead spend your time where it should be, out by the river.

If you want a single room, we can arrange that. Contact us, and we will adapt the accommodation to your wishes.

Food & drinks during the fishing trip

Food is a natural part of the experience during your fishing trip in Montenegro. The rhythm of the days is simple. Breakfast before fishing, lunch by the water, and dinner in the evening with the group.

You'll eat local dishes made with ingredients from the area. Grilled meat, fresh vegetables, cheeses, and freshly baked bread are common. The food is simple, well-prepared, and perfect after a day out by the river.

Lunches are often eaten near the fishing spot to maintain the pace. In the evening, you'll dine at local restaurants for a more social end to the day.

It's a relaxed part of the trip where the food, company, and the day's fishing naturally come together.

fish species and bait choice

Fishing in Montenegro primarily revolves around trout, grayling, and huchen. It is a diverse type of fishing where methods are adapted according to the water, season, and conditions.

Trout and grayling are most often fished with dry flies and nymphs. During the summer, when insect life is active, dry fly fishing is often at its best. You fish for rising fish in clear water where presentation makes a big difference.

Nymph fishing works consistently throughout the season, especially in faster currents where the fish are deeper. It's a method that provides good control and often steady fishing throughout the day.

For those targeting huchen, it's all about streamer fishing. Larger flies are actively fished through deeper sections and along edges where the fish are holding. It's a more dynamic type of fishing where bites often come quickly and hard.

The great thing about Montenegro is that you can use several different techniques during the same trip. Our fishing guides will help you choose the right method for the day, so you are always fishing correctly in the right water.
