Exotic fly fishing trip for bonefish, GT, and triggerfish in Anaa

During a week on the Anaa Atoll, you'll fish for species such as bonefish, giant and bluefin trevally, bohar snapper, Napoleon wrasse, and triggerfish, plus a variety of other exciting reef fish. Consider this a mixed fishery, where it's not uncommon to land 20–25 new species on fly during your stay.

The bonefish population is well protected through local initiatives and a conservation period during spawning. This keeps the population strong, healthy, and with low fishing pressure. Together with a new marine reserve, this provides good conditions for sustainable fishing in the future.

In Anaa, only six people fish at a time. This makes the experience personal and authentic, and is suitable for solo travelers as well as couples or small groups. The combination of fishing and culture makes this a trip that will stay with you.

How fishing works in Anaa

This trip is best suited for intermediate to experienced saltwater fly anglers, solo travelers, couples, and small groups who want to discover one of French Polynesia's lesser-known atolls. We accommodate up to six anglers at a time, with access to Anaa's flats, reef, and lagoon throughout the week.

Fishing around Anaa is divided into three main areas: the bonefish flats, the inshore reef, and the reef edge. A typical day begins in the morning targeting bonefish with 8–9 weight rods. In the afternoon, you fish along the reef and reef edge with a 12-weight rod, in pursuit of GT, bohar snapper, Napoleon wrasse, and bluefin trevally.

Bonefish fishing can be excellent, with individual fish or pairs moving over very shallow water. Most weigh around 2–2.5 kg, but larger specimens up to 4–5 kg are regularly caught. Unlike in the Caribbean, for example, it's not about large schools, but about hunting individual larger fish. This makes the fishing more challenging and rewarding.

Always have a 12-weight rod ready even during bonefish fishing, as larger predatory fish often patrol the edges of the vast sand flats. Water temperature and currents in the lagoon are affected by ocean swells and vary throughout the year. Transportation to the fishing spots usually takes about 20–30 minutes by boat.

Accommodation and food

You'll stay in a family-run guesthouse a short walk from the turquoise lagoon. The main building has four rooms, and there are also two detached cabanas. A calm and beautiful place to spend your week in Anaa.

There's a shared dining room and bar, and a patio perfect for a drink after a long day on the water. The food highlights local flavors. Breakfast consists of fresh eggs, bread, local jams and honey, fruit, baguettes, and French-style cheeses.

Lunch and drinks are packed each morning and brought out on the boat to the flats: water, sandwiches, snacks, crackers, and fruit. Dinner is served around 7 PM and is one of the trip's highlights, featuring local specialties such as poisson cru, fish marinated in coconut milk and lime, and freshly caught lobster.

Equipment and flies

Fishing on Anaa has a varied species focus, with large bonefish at the center, but predatory fish such as trevally and various reef species also frequently appear. For bonefish, classic patterns in sizes 2–8 work well, especially in natural colors like beige and light green. Have both heavier flies with lead eyes and lighter variants, depending on depth and current conditions.

Bonefish are best fished with rods in class 7–9, a floating line, and leaders around 14–20 lb. Always have a heavier rod ready at the same time, as larger predators like GT and bluefin trevally often move along the edges of the flats.

For trevally and other predatory fish, heavier equipment is required, usually class 12, with leaders up to 80–100 lb fluorocarbon. The flies are larger, often 8–15 cm, and imitate baitfish in natural colors.

Fishing along the reef edge is demanding and places high demands on both equipment and anglers. Strong rods, durable leaders, and robust flies are crucial for handling large fish such as GT, Napoleon wrasse, and snapper.

Also consider ancillary equipment: polarized sunglasses, good wading boots, tools, and good sun protection. It makes a difference to how much you get out of your days on the water.
