Fishing in the Maldives

Fishing in the Maldives is diverse and suitable for both beginners in tropical fly fishing and those with previous experience from fishing trips abroad. The combination of flats, lagoons, and reefs means you'll experience several different types of fishing during the same trip, creating a developing and exciting experience from the first day to the last.

On the shallow flats, a visual and technical fly fishing is practiced where you often sight fish for species such as bonefish, triggerfish, and various types of trevally. This is a perfect setup for those who want to learn tropical fly fishing in the Maldives, while also having the chance to catch several species on the same day. Variation in both environment and fish means no two days are alike.

For those seeking more action, there's the option to focus on Giant Trevally in the surf zone, one of the most sought-after experiences in tropical fishing. Here you fish along reef edges and wave zones where GT actively hunt. The strikes are explosive and require the right equipment, timing, and tempo, making this a type of fishing that attracts many experienced fly fishermen.

It is precisely this variation that makes the Maldives one of the most interesting destinations for fly fishing in tropical environments

Host - John Kärki

John Kärki is a passionate fly fisherman with extensive experience in both Nordic and tropical fishing. He has been fishing since childhood and possesses broad knowledge of species such as sea trout, pike, and other predatory fish.

In his daily life, John works as a fisheries conservation officer in Stockholm and Uppland, where he contributes to the development and preservation of our waters and fish stocks. He also shares his knowledge through articles in Svenskt Fiske, as well as through fishing events, lectures, and video productions.

As your host on this fishing trip, John will be with you throughout the entire experience, from preparations at home in Sweden to the days out on the water, where he will assist you with technique, tactics, and lure selection.

Preparation Day in Sweden

The preparation day in Sweden is an important part of your fishing trip to the Maldives with John Kärki and Outside Travels. It's a successful and appreciated day where last year's fishing group had the opportunity to practice technique, get a feel for the equipment, and prepare for tropical fly fishing.

During the day, we'll go through the right fly-fishing equipment, including rods, reels, lines, and flies adapted for species like Giant Trevally, triggerfish, and bonefish. You'll get to test equipment, ask questions, and receive concrete tips directly from John Kärki, which will give you confidence before the trip.

The preparation day also gives you the opportunity to meet the other participants and build camaraderie even before departure. By being well-prepared, you can focus entirely on the fishing once you're on the Maldives flats.

fish species and bait choice

The Maldives offers a wide variety of fish species such as Giant Trevally, Bluefin Trevally, bonefish, and triggerfish. The combination of flats, lagoons, and reefs makes the fishing varied and challenging, allowing you to adjust your focus day by day.

On the flats, you often fish with rod classes #7–9 for bonefish and triggerfish using shrimp and crab imitations. Here, it's all about precision and correct presentation.

For Giant Trevally in the surf zone and along the reefs, heavier tackle in rod classes #11–12 is used along with larger flies like poppers and streamers. This is a more intense fishery where strikes are fast and powerful.

Throughout the trip, John Kärki will be with you, assisting with fly selection, equipment, and tactics, both during the preparation day and out on the water.
