fish species and bait choice
Fishing in Alaska is highly seasonal and adapted to the species migrating up the river systems. From June to September, you'll encounter intense salmon runs and some of the world's best wild rainbow trout fishing. Our guides daily adapt techniques and lure choices to current conditions.
Pacific Salmon – Species and Seasons
- King Salmon
Season: June – mid-July
Fished with large streamers, tube flies, wobblers, and strong spinners. This requires heavier gear and two-handed rods or strong single-handed rods. - Sockeye Salmon
Season: late July
Primarily caught on flies with smaller, discreet patterns and floss flies. A technical but very rewarding fishery. - Chum Salmon
Season: late July – August
Aggressive species that readily strike large, colorful streamers and spin flies. Perfect for those seeking plenty of action. - Pink Salmon
Season: late July – August
Smaller but extremely numerous. Small streamers, spinners, and lighter lures work excellently, making this species ideal for beginners and families. - Silver Salmon (Coho)
Season: late July – September
A favorite for many. Actively fished with streamers, surface flies, spinners, and wobblers. Known for its hard runs and high jumps.
Rainbow trout fishing in Alaska is renowned for its strong, wild fish and pristine river systems. Here you'll fish along long stretches with deep pools, current edges, and shallow riffles where rainbow trout actively hunt.
The largest fish are often caught from early to mid-June during the smolt migration, when streamers and fish imitations are very effective. From late July to early September, the rainbow trout follow the salmon spawn and readily take egg patterns, flesh flies, and larger nymphs. During calmer periods, excellent dry fly fishing also occurs. The combination of quantity, size, and variety makes rainbow trout fishing in Alaska a memorable experience.

Before a fishing trip to Alaska
Which fish species are found in Alaska?
Which fish species are found in Alaska?
Alaska offers some of the world's best sport fishing with a large and diverse fish population. Here you can fish for all five Pacific salmon species: King Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon, and Pink Salmon. Each species has its own season and offers different types of fishing, from heavy power struggles to fast and acrobatic fights.
In addition to salmon, there is fantastic fishing for rainbow trout, which in Alaska are wild, strong, and often large. Rainbow trout fishing is considered among the best in the world, especially during periods when salmon migrate upstream. Many waters also contain grayling and Dolly Varden, providing extra variety and the opportunity for truly exciting fly fishing.
Fishing is tailored to the season and your interests, and our guides will help you target the right species at the right time.
When should one go on a fishing trip to Alaska?
When should one go on a fishing trip to Alaska?
The fishing season in Alaska runs from June to September, and the best time to travel depends on the species you want to catch. Early summer, from June to mid-July, is peak season for king salmon and the largest rainbow trout. In late July and August, sockeye, chum, and pink salmon dominate in large numbers, offering intense and action-packed fishing.
Late summer, from late July to September, is perfect for silver salmon, which offer tough fights and spectacular jumps. The same period is also considered peak season for rainbow trout fishing, as the fish gather around the rivers during the salmon spawn.
In short: no matter when you travel during the summer, there's always really good fishing in Alaska, but the choice of period dictates which species will be in focus.

Facts about the country
Facts about the country
Alaska is the largest state in the USA and is located in the far northwest of North America, between Canada and the Bering Sea. The region is known for its magnificent wilderness, pristine rivers, high mountains, and vast natural areas where wildlife still dominates the landscape. Here you can find everything from bears, moose, and wolves to sea eagles and abundant salmon.
Despite its size, Alaska has a relatively small population, meaning that large parts of the state are completely undeveloped and can only be reached by air or boat. Nature plays a central role in daily life, and fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation are deeply rooted in the culture.
The currency is the US dollar (USD), the language is English, and the time zone is Alaska Time (AKST), nine hours behind Swedish time. Alaska is a safe and well-organized travel destination with high security and good infrastructure for travelers, especially within nature and adventure tourism. It is easy to travel to and perfect for fishing trips.
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Yes, there is Wi-Fi at the lodge in Alaska. Since the lodge is in a secluded location and accessed by seaplane, the speed and stability may vary slightly, but there is ample connectivity to stay in touch with family and friends, share photos, and have some internet access during your stay. For best coverage, satellite or long-distance solutions are often used, which provide better coverage than regular mobile connections in these remote areas.
How do you fish in Alaska?
How do you fish in Alaska?
Fishing in Alaska primarily takes place in clear rivers and flowing waters, combining fly fishing and spin fishing depending on the species and season. During the summer, large numbers of salmon migrate up the rivers, creating intense and accessible fishing from boats, wading in the river, or along gravel banks.
Salmon fishing in Alaska is adapted to the species. King salmon are fished with heavier tackle and larger flies or lures, while coho, chum, and pink salmon often provide action-packed fishing with streamers, spinners, and spoons. Fly fishing with egg imitations and brightly colored patterns is very effective during the runs.
Rainbow trout fishing in Alaska is primarily done with flies and focuses on natural food sources such as smolt, salmon roe, and insects. The fishing is technical, varied, and offers a chance for large, wild fish that hold in current seams and backwaters.
All fishing days are led by local fishing guides who adapt techniques, locations, and pace according to the season and experience level. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler, you will receive a well-planned itinerary that maximizes both the experience and the results – in one of the world's premier destinations for fly fishing and salmon fishing.
How are the weather and climate?
How are the weather and climate?
Alaska has a cool to mild summer climate, perfect for fishing and outdoor activities. The fishing season normally runs from June to September, when daytime temperatures are usually between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius, sometimes warmer in mid-summer. Nights can be chilly, especially early and late in the season.
Summer offers long, bright days, and during parts of the period, the sun barely sets at all. This allows for maximum time for fishing and outdoor experiences. However, the weather can change quickly – sun, clouds, and light rain can occur on the same day – which is a natural part of Alaska's wilderness.
Rain is common but rarely persistent, and the rivers generally maintain stable levels thanks to glaciers and snowmelt. With the right clothing, the climate is very pleasant and well-suited for fly fishing, salmon fishing, and rainbow trout fishing.
In short: Alaska offers a fresh, varied, and fish-friendly climate, where the weather enhances the sense of adventure without limiting the fishing.
