fish species and bait choice
The Rio Grande is primarily known for its sea trout fishing, offering fish of a size and condition that few places in the world can match. In addition to sea trout, there is also resident trout in the river, but it is the anadromous fish that attract anglers from all over the world.
Bait and fly selection
Fishing is adapted to the season, water levels, and light conditions:
- Nymphs in sizes 6–12, preferably with rubber legs. Popular patterns include EMB, Green Machine, Copper John Rubber Leg, and Girdle Bug.
- Sunray Shadow and similar tube flies are very effective, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Streamers and leeches in black, chartreuse, or dark contrasting colors for higher water or poorer visibility.
- Classic salmon tube flies also work excellently, especially in black/blue or black/chartreuse.

Argentina is one of the world's most diverse countries for sport fishing, attracting anglers from all over the globe. With everything from cold glacial rivers in Patagonia to warm jungle rivers in the north, it offers a unique range of species, methods, and environments. Here, you can fly-fish for sea trout in the Rio Grande, hunt for monster rainbow trout in Patagonia, or experience adrenaline-fueled fishing for golden dorado in northern Argentina.
Sport fishing in Argentina is characterized by large, pristine waters with low fishing pressure and clear rules regarding catch and release, especially in exclusive fishing waters and lodges. Guided fishing is common and of a high standard, with experienced local guides who know every stretch and adapt the fishing to the season and conditions.
The climate varies greatly depending on the region and time of year, which means that the fishing season differs between various destinations. This implies that it is practically possible to fish year-round in the country. The infrastructure for fishing trips is well-developed with high-standard lodges, good food, safe transportation, and a focus on the overall experience.

How do you fish in the Rio Grande?
How do you fish in the Rio Grande?
Fishing in Rio Grande is primarily done with fly fishing for sea trout. Depending on the season and water levels, both single-handed rods, switch rods, and double-handed rods are used. During low water and calm conditions, fishing is often done with dry flies or riffling hitches, while higher water requires sinking tips, streamers, and nymphs.
The fishing is well-organized with rotation between pools, allowing the water to rest. You will fish with experienced local guides who adjust methods, fly choice, and equipment according to the day's conditions to give you the best possible chance at Rio Grande's large sea trout.
What is the weather and climate like?
What is the weather and climate like?
Rio Grande is located in Tierra del Fuego in southern Patagonia and has a cool, windy, and changeable climate. During the fishing season from November to April, temperatures typically range between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, with cooler mornings and evenings.
Weather changes can happen quickly, and wind is a constant factor, which is part of the charm of fishing here. Rain occurs but is rarely persistent. With the right clothing and the layering principle, the climate is very well suited for fly fishing for sea trout in Rio Grande.
