Fishing in the Maldives

Fishing in the Maldives is a tropical adventure where every day is governed by the tides, light, and movement in the water. Here you fish in some of the world's most diverse saltwater environments with shallow sand and coral flats, reef edges, and open surf zones where predatory fish hunt in extremely shallow water. Fly fishing is visual, intense, and technical, with fast-paced situations, short casts, and brutal strikes.

Fishing is done both by wading and with our local guides who have fished these waters since childhood, adapting each fishing day to the tides and weather to give you the best possible fishing experience.

Fishing Season in the Maldives

The best period for a fishing trip to the Maldives is from September to April. During these months, the climate is stable with consistent winds, pleasant temperatures, and good visibility on the flats. The tides play a crucial role, determining which areas and species are fished day by day, making the fishing both varied and lively.

This is the high season for tropical fly fishing and the period when your chances are best for several of the Maldives' most coveted species.

Tailor your fishing trip to the Maldives

The Maldives is one of our most popular tailor-made destinations, and it's easy to see why. Here you'll find unique opportunities to shape your fishing trip exactly as you want it, while also making the adventure even greater than just the fishing itself.

In addition to our classic setup with tropical fly fishing, you can combine the trip with accommodation at a resort, seaplane transfers between atolls, snorkeling on vibrant reefs, or try spin fishing for GT. This makes the Maldives a perfect destination both for those who want to focus entirely on fishing and for those traveling with family or friends who want to experience more than just fishing.

We can customize the trip duration, number of fishing days, accommodation type, and activities according to your wishes. If you want to alternate intense fishing days with more relaxed days at a resort, excursions, snorkeling, or sunbathing, we can arrange that. Thanks to our network of local guides and partners, we can create flexible arrangements with high quality and safe transportation.

With many years of experience in fishing trips to the Maldives, we know how to combine fishing, comfort, and adventure in the right way. Whether you want to hunt Giant Trevally in shallow water or create a memorable trip where fishing is part of a larger experience, we will help you put together a fishing trip to the Maldives that suits you perfectly.

If you want to make more of your adventure, the Maldives is the right place to start.

The guesthouse is located close to the sea and boat moorings, which allows for smooth transfers to the day's fishing areas. Here you will be met with a warm and familiar atmosphere, where the staff do their utmost to make you feel at home throughout your stay.

Meals are served at the accommodation and consist of local Maldivian dishes, often based on fresh fish, rice, vegetables, and spices. Simple, well-prepared, and perfectly adapted for intensive fishing days. For those who want to combine fishing with more comfort, there is also the option to upgrade to resort accommodation or combine a guesthouse stay with a few nights at a resort.

fish species and bait choice

The Maldives is one of the world's premier destinations for tropical fly fishing, offering varied fishing on flats, reef edges, and in the surf zone. Choosing the right fly is crucial for success with species such as Giant Trevally, triggerfish, and bonefish.

Giant Trevally (GT) is the main target for many. Fishing is done with large, bulky flies on strong hooks in sizes 6/0–8/0. Proven colours are black, black/purple, black/blue, tan, olive/white, and chartreuse/white. When the fish are cautious, Clouser Minnows in 2/0–4/0, as well as crab, shrimp, and squid imitations, also work.

Triggerfish are almost exclusively fished with crab flies in natural sand colours, with patterns like Flexo Crab and Itchy Trigger being very effective.

Bonefish are caught on classic patterns like Crazy Charlie and Gotcha in sizes 4–8, often through sight fishing on shallow flats.

Bohar snapper are often caught as bycatch during GT fishing, while milkfish are a technical challenge fished with algae imitations, smaller hooks, and thinner leader.

We share more tips in our blog posts on fly selection, technique, and equipment, and you are always welcome to contact us for personal advice before your fishing trip to the Maldives.

Before a fishing trip to the Maldives

What fish species are found in the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the world's most species-rich destinations for tropical sport fishing and fly fishing. Here you will find varied fishing on flats, reef edges and in the surf zone with a chance of catching several coveted species.

The most common and popular fish species in the Maldives are:

  • Giant Trevally (GT) – The main target of the trip for many. An extremely strong and explosive predatory fish hunted along reef edges and in shallow water.
  • Triggerfish – Technical and exciting flats fishing with crab imitations.
  • Bonefish – Classic sight fishing on shallow sand flats.
  • Bluefin Trevally and Island Trevally – Fast and aggressive fighters often fished on flats and reefs.
  • Bohar snapper and other snappers – Common bycatch when GT fishing.
  • Milkfish – One of the most challenging species in the Maldives, fished by wading with algae imitations.
  • Permit – Occurs sporadically and is fished with crab flies.

The wide variety of fish species makes the Maldives a complete destination for tropical fly fishing, whether you dream of brutal GT strikes or technical sight fishing on the flats.

When should you go on a fishing trip to the Maldives?

The best time for a fishing trip to the Maldives is between September and April. During this period, the weather is stable, the temperature is pleasant, and the conditions for tropical fly fishing are excellent.

This is peak season for fishing for species such as Giant Trevally, triggerfish, bonefish, trevally species, and milkfish. Calm winds, good visibility on the flats, and clear tidal movements make it easier to fish both reef edges, the surf zone, and shallow sand flats.

  • September–November: Excellent fishing for GT and trevally. The water is warm and the fishing is varied.

  • December–February: Stable weather and top conditions for flats fishing for triggerfish and bonefish.

  • March–April: Continued strong fishing, often with a chance for larger fish and more active movement on the flats.

We schedule our trips during the period we believe offers the best combination of weather, fishing, and experience. Of course, we will help you choose the right dates based on which species you most want to catch and how you want to plan your trip.

Can I customize my fishing trip to the Maldives?

Yes, absolutely. The Maldives is one of our most popular tailor-made destinations, and we are happy to customize the fishing trip to your preferences. You can adjust the length of your trip, number of fishing days, type of accommodation, and fishing focus.

It is possible to combine fly fishing with a resort stay, seaplane transfers between islands, snorkeling, diving, or spin fishing. Many also choose to travel with family or friends who do not fish, and in that case, we create an itinerary that suits everyone in the group.

We at Outside Travels have extensive experience with fishing trips to the Maldives and are happy to help you build a trip that offers more than just fishing. Contact us and we will create a personalized itinerary that will make your tropical adventure even grander and more memorable.

Facts about the country

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, consisting of approximately 1,200 coral islands spread across 26 atolls. For anglers, the country is unique due to its shallow flats, reef edges, lagoons, and current-rich channels, which create extremely varied and productive fishing opportunities.

The country has a tropical climate year-round with warm air and water temperatures, making the Maldives an ideal destination for tropical sport fishing. Fishing is an important part of the culture and is largely sustainable, with rod and handline as traditional methods.

The capital, Malé, is the hub for onward travel to the fishing atolls. English is widely spoken, the currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa, but USD is accepted everywhere. As an angler, you will experience sight fishing on the flats, fishing along reef edges, and intense fishing in the surf zone for species such as Giant Trevally, triggerfish, and bonefish.

The Maldives combines exotic nature, stable fishing conditions, and unique environments, making the country one of the world's most sought-after destinations for tropical fly fishing and sport fishing.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes. In the Maldives, Wi-Fi is available at accommodations, both at local guesthouses and resorts. The connection is sufficient for messaging, social media, and basic work. Speeds may vary depending on the island, weather, and network load, but it is generally good enough to stay in touch and share fishing memories during your trip.

How do you fish in the Maldives?

Fishing in the Maldives is primarily tropical fly fishing on shallow flats, reef edges, and in the surf zone. You often fish wading in knee-to-waist-deep water, sight fishing for species such as Giant Trevally, triggerfish, bonefish, and various trevallys. Tides, wind, and light play a significant role, and fishing is adapted day by day according to the conditions.

We fish with local guides who know the reefs and flats inside out. They will help you with positioning, presentation, and the right technique for each species. For those who wish, it is also possible to combine fly fishing with spinning, as well as fishing from a boat towards deeper reefs and channels.

What is the weather and climate like?

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year round. Daytime temperatures are usually between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature is a stable 27–29 degrees. The climate is influenced by two monsoon periods, with the drier and more stable period extending from November to April.

During the fishing season from September to April, the weather is generally very good for sport fishing, with calmer winds, better visibility on the flats, and stable conditions for both fly fishing and spin fishing. Even during periods of shorter rain showers, fishing is often effective, as cloud cover can make the fish less shy and more active.
