Regarding the fishing trip

Salmon fishing in Iceland

Iceland is Europe's obvious destination for exclusive salmon fishing. Here, the fantastic river Stóra Laxá awaits. A river with a mix of open expanses, dramatic mountains, and a stock of wild Atlantic salmon that is considered one of the best in Iceland. Fishing is conducted with a limited number of rods per week, providing peace, space, and a genuine experience by the water.

A salmon fishing trip to Iceland is about more than just fishing. You fish in well-managed beats with crystal-clear water, lava formations, and dramatic ravines as a backdrop. Many stretches offer both classic pools and technical sections where presentation and strategy are key. The combination of world-class fishing, professional organization, and nature-oriented accommodation makes Iceland a perfect destination for those seeking high-level salmon fishing in a unique environment.

We offer two carefully selected packages on Stóra Laxá.

The exclusive option on the lower stretches combines easily accessible and comfortable fishing with high-standard accommodation and service. Here you get a smooth and luxurious overall experience with some of the river's most productive pools.

The more budget-friendly option on the upper sections is aimed at the dedicated angler. Here, technical and fantastic salmon fishing awaits in more challenging pools, where both physical condition and fishing skills are put to the test.

More information about each arrangement can be found further down.

Fishing in Stóra Laxá

The river stretches for over 90 kilometers, flowing from Lake Grænavatn through the dramatic and scenic canyons of Laxárgljúfur before opening up over vast meadows and finally meeting the glacial river Hvítá. The variations in the landscape are reflected in the fishing—from fast, rocky pools and canyon sections to calmer, deeper swing pools on the open plains. We fish two different beats with two different lodges. Below is a description of the different beats and accommodation options.

Surface fishing is the preferred tactic and an obvious part of Icelandic salmon fishing. Throughout the season, it’s a fantastic experience to see large salmon take small dry flies, hitch flies, and Sunray Shadow just below the surface.

Stóra Laxá Lower

On Stóra Laxá Lower, over 70 marked pools are available for only 8 rods, providing plenty of space and an exclusive feel. The variations between the pools make the fishing both technical and exciting, regardless of experience level.

Lower Stóra Laxá is easily accessible and suitable for all types of salmon anglers. It features several of the river's most productive pools, making the beat particularly attractive for those who want to combine comfort, structure, and truly high-class salmon fishing in Iceland.

Stóra Laxá Upper

Stóra Laxá Canyon Beat (upper) is one of Iceland's most spectacular salmon beats with approximately 50 varied pools for only 4 rods. Here you fish in crystal-clear water cutting through dramatic canyons and lava formations on the highland plains, with a chance at some of the country's largest Atlantic salmon.

The upper sections offer more technical and demanding fishing where precision, tactics, and physical fitness are put to the test. You hike along lava fields, sight-fish large Atlantic salmon, and actively work on your presentation in concentrated currents and deep canyon pools.

Accommodation is in our self-catering lodge, a budget-friendly option for the dedicated angler who wants to maximize time on the water. Here, raw Icelandic nature is combined with high-class salmon fishing, an experience for those seeking something out of the ordinary.

Accommodation

Lower Stóra Laxá Lodge

Lower Stóra Laxá Lodge is the main base for the fishing and offers a fully staffed, newly renovated lodge with views of the river. The accommodation is completed to a high standard and features both a sauna and a jacuzzi where you can relax and enjoy the dramatic views, and with a bit of luck, the northern lights in the evenings.

The lodge has 6 twin rooms and 1 double room, a spacious dining room, comfortable common areas, and a drying room for equipment. Guests are served three meals a day, with a relaxed menu of very good quality.

Accommodation

Upper Stóra Laxá Lodge

The Upper Lodge, which is the base for the fishing, was completely renovated in 2022 and offers a comfortable self-catering option for up to four double rooms. Here you live close to the water in a more adventurous environment in the Icelandic highlands. On the veranda, a jacuzzi awaits where you can relax after a day of fishing with a view of the dramatic nature. A perfect choice for close-knit groups who want to combine proximity to fishing with freedom and high comfort.
