About the fishing trip

Fly fishing on Jurassic Lake in Patagonia – monster-sized rainbow trout

Jurassic Lake, also known as Lago Strobel, is one of the world's most legendary destinations for fly fishing for truly large rainbow trout. In this remote part of Patagonia, you'll encounter windswept plains, crystal-clear waters, and extremely low fishing pressure. The result is strong, aggressive rainbow trout of impressive size, often between 4 and 8 kilograms, with a chance of even larger fish.

Fishing takes place both in Lake Strobel itself and in the Barrancoso River, the only tributary to the lake. Here, a highly varied fly fishing experience is offered, including sight fishing along the banks, streamer fishing in open water, and technical fishing in the river's various zones. Dry flies, nymphs, streamers, and mouse patterns are used depending on conditions and fish behavior, making every fishing day unique.

Fishing in Jurassic Lake

Lake Strobel, better known as Jurassic Lake, is located in a remote and windy mountainous area in southern Argentina. It is home to some of the world's largest rainbow trout, thanks to an extremely abundant food supply and very low fishing pressure. The result is fast, strong fish that grow to impressive sizes in a short period.

Through exclusive access to over 14 kilometers of Jurassic Lake, including several sheltered coves, we can offer varied and effective fly fishing even when the Patagonian winds make their presence felt. Sight fishing near the shore is often possible, providing a technical and very visual fishing experience.

Barrancoso River

One of the trip's main highlights is the Barrancoso River, the only tributary to Lake Strobel. Here, we fish approximately 10 kilometers of the river, divided into upper, middle, and lower sections with distinctly different characteristics. Each section offers its own fishing, with clear water and resident, robust rainbow trout.

Fishing Season

The fishing season at Jurassic Lake extends from October to May. The period from November to March is considered high season with stable fishing, open waters, and very active fish. Throughout the entire season, there is an opportunity for both sight fishing in the lake and varied river fishing in the Barrancoso.

Fishing is primarily done with floating lines and rods in classes 6–8. Streamers, nymphs, large dry flies, and mouse patterns are all effective depending on location, weather, and conditions. The combination of lake and river fishing makes Jurassic Lake one of Patagonia's most complete and sought-after fly fishing destinations.

Accommodation – Lago Strobel Lodge

Lago Strobel Lodge is located right on the shore of Jurassic Lake, just a cast away from the legendary rainbow trout fishing. Here, you live right in the heart of the fishing, with quick and easy access to both the lake and the Barrancoso River.

The lodge offers comfortable and personalized accommodation with four double rooms, generous common areas, and a relaxed atmosphere. The spacious living room with views of Jurassic Lake is a natural gathering place after a day of fishing, perfect for relaxing, sharing the day's experiences, and enjoying good food and drink. There is also a large dining area where we gather every evening for dinners with South American flavors.

Amenities such as satellite TV, a fly-tying station, an open bar, and free wireless internet are available. The lodge is self-sufficient in electricity through wind power with a diesel generator as backup and has access to electricity 24 hours a day.

The experienced and service-oriented staff create a warm, safe, and problem-free environment, fully focused on ensuring you have a memorable fishing trip to Jurassic Lake.

Food & Drink in Argentina

Lago Strobel Lodge offers high-class cuisine, led by an experienced chef and sous chef. All food is prepared from scratch, with a focus on Argentinian culinary traditions and local ingredients. The goal is to provide you with a genuine and memorable dining experience that perfectly complements your fishing.

Breakfast
Every morning, a generous breakfast is served, featuring coffee, tea, juices, eggs, ham, dairy products, freshly baked bread, butter, Patagonian jams, honey, cereals, and fruit. The perfect fuel for a full day by the water.

Lunch
Lunches are tailored to the day's fishing spots and are served either in the field or at the lodge. The menu varies and may include grilled meat or fish, salads, cold cuts, cheese, and fresh fruit.

Snacks
Coffee and tea are available 24/7, along with simple snacks like cookies, crackers, and sandwiches for those who need extra energy between sessions.

Dinner
After fishing, a well-composed three-course dinner with Patagonian flavors awaits each evening. Dinner often begins with local appetizers such as cheese and cured meats, followed by classic dishes like asado, lamb, fish, or homemade pasta. The evening concludes with dessert and fresh fruit.

Drinks
A wide selection of drinks is included, featuring Argentinian wines such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat, as well as beer, spirits, whisky, cognac, and non-alcoholic options. Drinks are available daily in the lodge's bar and common areas.

fish species and bait choice

Fishing at Jurassic Lake (Lago Strobel) and the Barrancoso River is entirely focused on wild rainbow trout of extreme size and condition. These fish are renowned worldwide for their explosive strength, aggressive bites, and impressive average weight. Rainbow trout over 5 kilos are common, and fish up to 10 kilos appear every season.

Rainbow Trout

The rainbow trout in Lago Strobel feed on a nutrient-rich diet and grow quickly. Fishing often takes place in shallow water and visually, making sight fishing a central part of the experience. The fish are not particularly selective, but fly size, movement, and presentation are crucial.

Effective baits and flies:

  • Streamers: Woolly Bugger, leech and baitfish imitations in black, olive, white, and brown. Sizes 12–16.
  • Nymphs: Larger nymphs with rubber legs in sizes 8–12, as well as smaller nymphs in sizes 10–16 tied on heavy hooks.
  • Dry flies: Large terrestrials like grasshoppers, Chernobyl ants, and skaters in sizes 6–10.
  • Mouse patterns: Very effective, especially on calm evenings and in the Barrancoso River.
  • Scuds: A must-have in several colors and sizes, both in the lake and the river.

In the Barrancoso River, fishing is primarily done with floating lines and precision. Nymphs, smaller streamers, and large dry flies work very well here, often in combination with sight fishing in clear water.

For anglers, Argentina is one of the world's most interesting countries, with strong populations of wild rainbow trout, brown trout, and other species in sparsely fished waters. The combination of low exploitation, abundant food, and large bodies of water yields fish in both size and quantity.

The currency is the Argentine Peso and the language is Spanish. The time zone is normally 4–5 hours behind Sweden, depending on the season. Argentina is generally a safe and well-visited destination for international anglers, especially on organized fishing trips to remote lodges in Patagonia.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

How do you fish in Jurassic Lake?

Fishing in Jurassic Lake is primarily done by fly fishing from the shore and along the banks. Sight fishing is common here, where you can spot large rainbow trout patrolling shallow water. Floating lines are mostly used, and fishing is done with nymphs, streamers, large dry flies, and mouse patterns.

In the Barrancoso River, fishing is more classic in flowing water with a floating line and a focus on presentation. The guides adapt the method, fly choice, and location according to the weather, wind, and fish behavior to give you the best possible chance of catching large fish.

How are the weather and climate?

The climate in Frovåg, Senja, is typical of Northern Norway, with fresh winds, clear air, and changeable weather. During the fishing season from April to September, temperatures usually range between 8 and 18 degrees Celsius – but some days offer brilliant sunshine and over 20 degrees.

When the sun warms the fjords and the sea is calm, fantastic fishing days await. At the same time, the sheltered coves mean it's almost always possible to find good fishing regardless of the weather. It's a good idea to pack layers and waterproof clothing, so you'll be ready for all conditions. The weather can change quickly!
