The Ebro Delta - a unique sport fishing area

The Ebro Delta has long been known as one of Spain's most interesting areas for sport fishing. Many associate the Ebro with catfish and carp, but where the river meets the Mediterranean, a completely different world opens up.

The nutrient-rich water, strong currents, and variation between shallow and deep water create fantastic conditions for predatory fish. Species such as bluefin tuna, bonito, dorado, sea bass, leerfish, and bluefish can be found here, making the area one of Europe's most exciting destinations for saltwater fishing.

Several different techniques are used depending on the species and conditions. Poppers, stickbaits, jigs, and casting floats are used extensively, while trolling and fishing with live bait can also be highly effective. Truly large bluefin tuna are caught regularly in the area, with individuals reaching weights of up to 250 kilos.

Fishing in the Ebro Delta – Spain

Fishing season:
April to October

Fishing groups:
1–8 people, with a maximum of 4 people per boat

Fishing in the Ebro Delta focuses primarily on bluefin tuna. The most common methods are popper, stickbait and jigs, but fishing with Bombeta - “little bomb” is also highly effective. This is a type of Bombarda rig that makes it possible to cast small lures long distances and present them naturally when tuna are chasing smaller baitfish near the surface. Trolling and live-bait fishing are also used depending on the conditions.

The area offers the chance to catch truly large fish, with individuals sometimes reaching weights of up to 250 kilos. At the same time, tuna weighing 30–80 kilos are often the most sought-after. They deliver explosive strikes, long runs and a really exciting fight on appropriately sized tackle.

The Ebro Delta is located in the province of Tarragona, approximately two hours from Barcelona Airport. From May to October, fishing trips mainly depart from L’Ametlla de Mar, providing quick access to several of the area’s most productive fishing spots.

In April, fishing instead takes place from L’Escala on the Costa Brava. Here, both the surroundings and the fishing are somewhat different, with excellent conditions for active spinning for tuna along the Catalan coast.

In addition to bluefin tuna, there is also the opportunity to encounter species such as mahi mahi, bonito, sea bass, leerfish and bluefish. The wide variety of species and fishing opportunities make the area one of Spain’s most diverse destinations for saltwater sport fishing.

Accommodation on this fishing trip

During the trip, you will stay in a lovely, spacious apartment right in the heart of the small fishing village, with restaurants, cafés, shops and the harbour all close by. It will be a natural gathering place during the trip, where you can relax together after a day of fishing, enjoy a cold drink and sum up the day’s experiences.

The apartment we normally use is our standard accommodation at the destination and also has a pool, which is especially welcome after a hot day out at sea.

At the same time, a large part of the trip’s charm lies in life outside the apartment. In the evenings, it is easy to stroll into the small fishing village, settle down at one of the local restaurants and experience the food, culture and relaxed Spanish atmosphere.

For larger groups or trips with special requirements, we can also use other apartments and accommodation in the area. We then choose the option that best suits the group size and trip arrangements.

Food & Drink in Spain

The food during the trip is of high quality with a distinct Mediterranean influence. You will be served three meals a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – with a focus on fresh ingredients and local flavors. Drinks are available during meals, and menus are adapted according to the season and what is best in the region.

Fish species and lure selection

Which species we target and which lures are used vary with the season, weather, and what is moving through the area that day.

Bluefin tuna are primarily fished with popper, stickbaits, and jigs. When conditions are suitable, live bait fishing is also used.

Bonito and dorado are often fished more actively with smaller stickbaits, jigs, and other fast-retrieved lures. Bombeta, a small casting float, can also be effective here when the fish are chasing small baitfish near the surface.

Sea bass, leerfish, and bluefish are fished with a combination of surface lures, smaller wobblers, jigs, and soft lures, depending on the location and conditions.

The guides choose the method and lures based on the day's conditions, so the fishing can vary considerably throughout the trip and offer the opportunity to try several different techniques.

The boat, the harbor and the fishing village

Fishing takes place from a well-equipped boat of approximately 22 feet, adapted for the active pursuit of bluefin tuna in the area. The boat is powered by a Yamaha 225 hp four-stroke engine and accommodates up to five people, including the guide. It is agile, fast, and provides plenty of working space once the fishing gets underway.

Fishing days start from the local harbor, where the boat is ready and waiting in the morning. There is also an opportunity to store fishing equipment between trips, so you do not have to carry everything back and forth each day.

The harbor is close to the small fishing village, giving the entire trip a simple and relaxed setup. After fishing, you can simply walk back to the accommodation, restaurants, and cafés. Here, intense days at sea alternate with peaceful evenings, local food, and that characteristic atmosphere of a small Spanish coastal village.

What fish species are found in the Ebro Delta?

The Ebro Delta offers rich and varied fishing thanks to the nutrients the Ebro River carries out into the Mediterranean. Here you can fish for bluefin tuna, bonito, dorado, sea bass, leerfish, and bluefish. There are also more species in the area, but these are the most common and sought-after for our trips. The Ebro Delta is known as perhaps Europe's most accessible place for truly action-packed saltwater fishing – and a favorite for anglers who enjoy techniques such as popper, stickbait, and jig.

When is the best time to go on a fishing trip to ....

The best time to go on a fishing trip to the Ebro Delta depends on where you're fishing from – and what type of tuna fishing you want to experience. To catch the real giants, tuna weighing up to 250 kilograms, the optimal period is April–October.

Can I customize my fishing trip?

Facts about the country

Spain is easy to travel in, uses the euro as currency and has the same electrical standards as Sweden. Areas such as Tarragona and Costa Brava are safe, well-organized and perfect for sport fishing thanks to their stable climate and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes, the accommodation has Wi-Fi. The speed may vary, but it works fine for general browsing and messaging. Otherwise, you can often browse just like at home with your Swedish subscription, as Spain is part of EU roaming.

How do you fish in the Ebro Delta?

In the Ebro Delta, we primarily fish for bluefin tuna with active spinning, where poppers, stickbaits, and jigs are most common. This results in incredibly visual strikes when the tuna are hunting at the surface.

In addition to spinning, bait fishing is used much more often than trolling. It's an effective method when targeting really large tuna that can weigh up to 250 kilograms. Trolling is an option, but it is used less frequently compared to bait fishing and spinning.

What's the weather and climate like?

The Ebro Delta delivers perfect fishing weather throughout the entire season. Spring starts strong with stable weather and truly excellent fishing when the tuna come close to the coast. During the summer, you'll experience warm days, calm mornings, and a sunny Mediterranean climate that makes every fishing session both pleasant and action-packed. Autumn continues with warm temperatures and consistent conditions where the fishing is often at its most intense.
