Fishing in Lake of the Woods

One of North America's most diverse fisheries

Here, a fishery awaits where no two days are alike, and the possibility of catching several dream fish in the same week is greater than in few other places.

The trip is also very flexible and can be customized to your wishes. You can choose between a fully guided setup, combine guided fishing days with self-guided fishing, or rent a boat and explore the lake at your own pace. There is also the possibility to extend your stay or tailor the arrangement to get the most out of your fishing adventure.

Musky – the lake's legendary predator

The mythical musky is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the trip. Known as "The Fish of 10,000 Casts," it has earned its reputation thanks to its size, intelligence, and explosive strikes.

Seeing a large musky follow the lure all the way to the boat before suddenly accelerating and striking in a swirl of water is an experience that gets the heart racing. This fishing requires patience, concentration, and the right technique, but the reward can be one of sport fishing's most spectacular predators.

Walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass

What makes Lake of the Woods unique is that fishing isn't just about musky. The lake offers fantastic mixed fishing where you have the opportunity every day to target several different species. As an angler, you decide how you want to divide your days.

Walleye fishing (similar to our zander) is of high quality and is effectively fished with jigs, blade baits, and vertical jigging along deep edges and rock structures.

Pike are abundant and offer hard strikes among reeds, shallows, and flats. There are also plenty of really large fish here that are happy to attack large lures.

For those who appreciate lighter tackle, smallmouth bass is a fantastic bonus. These furiously strong fish offer explosive fights and active fishing where everything from jerkbaits and crankbaits to jigs and topwater lures can be very effective.

Sustainable fishing in a unique environment

Fishing is conducted with experienced guides who know the lake inside and out. Large musky are always carefully released to preserve the fantastic stock, and other species are also handled with great respect. The result is sustainable sport fishing where the chances of truly large fish continue to be exceptional year after year.

Gear and bait

Many choose to bring two sets, a heavier one for musky and pike, and a lighter one for walleye and smallmouth bass.

For pike and musky fishing, a spinning or baitcasting rod of 8–9 feet with casting weights around 100–250 grams is recommended, along with a powerful low-profile or multi-reel with a smooth drag. Braided line of 80–100 lb is standard and supplemented with a strong steel or fluorocarbon leader. The musky is an extremely strong predator and the large lures place high demands on the equipment.

For Walleye and smallmouth bass, a significantly lighter spinning rod or baitcasting rod works excellent. A rod of 7–7.6 feet with casting weights around 10–40 grams covers most situations and is perfect for jigs, jerkbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. A spinning or low-profile reel loaded with 0.12–0.18 mm braided line and a fluorocarbon leader provides well-balanced equipment for most of the fishing.

Lures

For musky fishing, large jerkbaits, soft plastics, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures are used. Many strikes occur right next to the boat during the classic figure eight maneuver, making every cast exciting right up to the rod tip.

For walleye, jigs are the most common method, but bladebaits, dropshot, and vertical jigging can also be very effective depending on the season and water temperature.

Smallmouth bass is an aggressive and hard-fighting species that readily attacks crankbaits, jerkbaits, chatterbaits, Ned rigs, tubes, and topwater lures. Under the right conditions, the fishing can be action-packed with many strikes throughout the day.

Pike are caught on everything from large soft plastics and spinnerbaits to jerkbaits and spoons, often over shoals, reed beds, and rocky plateaus.
