Fishing in Greenland

Greenland offers some of the world's most magnificent and untouched sport fishing. Here you fish in crystal-clear rivers surrounded by wild mountain scenery, glaciers, and complete tranquility. The focus of our fishing trips to Greenland is on sea-run Arctic char, an extremely strong and feisty fish that provides intense fights in flowing waters, pools, and lake outlets.

Fishing is primarily done with a fly rod, but spin fishing also works very well. Arctic char are aggressive and often strike hard, whether you are fishing with nymphs, streamers, or surface foam flies. The variations between different river sections mean that each day offers new fishing, new environments, and new challenges. On the trip, we fish in several rivers to distribute fishing pressure and always be able to choose the water that fishes best for the day.

Fishing Season in Greenland

The fishing season in Greenland extends from mid-July to early September. It is during this period that the sea-run Arctic char migrate from the sea into the rivers. Early in the season, the fish are often extremely strong and silver-bright, while late summer offers stable fishing with large quantities of fish gathered in pools and calmer sections.

The Camp in Greenland

Camp Isua is an exclusive and secluded glamping camp in the heart of the Greenlandic wilderness, strategically located near some of the area's best char rivers. Here, you'll stay comfortably in spacious glamping tents with proper beds, heating, and high comfort, while having nature right outside your door.

The camp offers common areas for meals and socializing, hot showers, toilets, and electricity. After a long day of fishing, you can relax in the sauna, enjoy the views of the fjord, and round off the evening with delicious food prepared by experienced chefs. The combination of luxurious accommodation, personalized service, and total proximity to fishing makes Camp Isua an obvious base for an unforgettable fishing trip in Greenland.

The Rivers of Greenland

Fishing in Greenland revolves around some of the world's most pristine and productive rivers for sea-run Arctic char. During your stay at Camp Isua, you will fish in three carefully selected rivers, each with its own character and strengths.

Isua River

Deep within the magnificent Kangerluarsussuaq Fjord flows the Isua, a powerful and crystal-clear river stretching approximately 10 kilometers. Here, you'll fish for sea-run Arctic char in an environment that feels completely untouched, far from the outside world. The Isua offers varied currents, deep pools, and classic holding spots where the strong Arctic char are truly put to the test. The combination of remoteness, dramatic scenery, and technical fishing makes the Isua one of Greenland's most impressive rivers.

Eqaluit

Approximately 45 minutes from Camp Isua, near the mouth of the fjord, lies Eqaluit. The name simply means "Arctic char" in Greenlandic, and the river certainly lives up to its name. The approximately 3-kilometer-long river is easy to fish with calmer stretches and large, clear pools. Eqaluit also flows into a clear lake where you can often see the Arctic char from shore, providing fantastic opportunities for sight fishing. A river suitable for all skill levels that delivers memorable fly fishing.

Ilivertallip Kuua (Southern River)

Ilivertallip Kuua is located about 40 minutes from the camp and offers calm, tactical fishing in crystal-clear water. The river is about 3 kilometers long and passes through three lakes along its course. Here, you'll fish in slow sections and open waters where presentation and timing are crucial. Ilivertallip Kuua is particularly known for its strong fishing later in the season and is a perfect complement to Isua and Eqaluit.

Together, these three rivers provide an unusually varied and complete Arctic char experience in Greenland, with minimal fishing pressure and maximum natural experiences.

Food & drinks in Camp Isua

The food at Camp Isua is an important part of the overall experience and is of high quality despite the remote location. In the camp, our experienced chefs prepare all meals on site, focusing on nutritious and well-cooked dishes suitable for long fishing days in the Greenlandic wilderness. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included every day, as well as coffee and snacks by the river.

The menus are based on carefully selected ingredients and are often supplemented with local elements. Fresh char from the area is used on selected occasions and prepared with respect for both taste and tradition. After a day of fishing, guests gather in the dining tent for a communal dinner, where good food, conversations, and the day's experiences are shared in a relaxed and warm atmosphere.

Beverage service primarily consists of non-alcoholic options that are included in the trip. Alcoholic beverages can be brought in limited quantities according to current regulations. The combination of well-prepared food, the nature around the camp, and the camaraderie makes meals at Camp Isua something many guests remember as strongly as the fishing itself.

fish species and bait choice

Fishing at Camp Isua revolves around sea-run Arctic char, one of Greenland's most sought-after sport fish. The char here are extremely strong, explosive, and often in very good condition thanks to the cold, nutrient-rich waters. The fish migrate from the sea up into the rivers and can occur in large quantities, providing intense and visual fly fishing.

For fly fishing, nymphs, streamers, and dry flies are primarily used. Color choices such as pink, purple, red, orange, and chartreuse are classic and very effective in these rivers. Heavily weighted nymphs are fished deep in fast-flowing sections, while lighter streamers and foam flies are used in calmer waters, pools, and lake outlets. Dry fly fishing with foam flies is often one of the absolute highlights of the trip, where the char explosively attack the fly on the surface.

Spin fishing also works very well, especially with spinners and spoons in bright colors. Single hooks and barbless hooks are mandatory for all fishing. Lure selection and technique are adjusted daily according to water levels, temperature, and fish behavior, and our guides will help you choose the right method for each river and situation.

Before a fishing trip to Greenland - Camp Isua

What fish species are found in Greenland?

In Greenland, sea-run Arctic char is by far the most common and sought-after sport fish species, especially in the rivers around Camp Isua. The Arctic char is known for its strength, explosive takes, and long runs, making it a fantastic sport fish for both fly and spin fishing.

In addition to Arctic char, sea trout are also found in some areas, but fishing in this region is primarily focused on Arctic char. During your stay, there is also the opportunity to cast a few lines in the sea. There, you have the chance to hook species such as spotted wolffish and halibut, which adds an extra dimension to the fishing trip.

When should one go on a fishing trip to Greenland?

The best time for a fishing trip to Greenland is from mid-July to early September. During this period, sea-run arctic char migrate up the rivers, providing intense and high-quality fishing in Isua, Eqaluit, and Ilivertallip Kuua.

July often offers large numbers of fish that have just entered the rivers, with aggressive strikes and strong fights.

August is considered by many to be the absolute best month, with stable weather and concentrated fishing in both flowing sections and calmer pools.

Early September may yield fewer fish but often larger individuals, especially in the calmer parts of the rivers.

Outside Travels has scheduled its trips to Greenland during precisely the period when the fishing, climate, and experience are at their best. If you would like help choosing the right week based on your preferences, we would be happy to guide you.

Facts about the country

Greenland is the world's largest island and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The country is an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark and is known for its untouched nature, vast fjords, glaciers, and wilderness. Despite its size, only about 56,000 inhabitants live here, mainly along the coasts.

The capital is Nuuk and is the hub for air travel, shipping, and administration. Greenland has an Arctic climate with cool summers and cold winters, which creates unique conditions for fishing, hunting, and outdoor life. The landscape is dominated by mountains, rivers, and ice, and large parts of the country are completely uninhabited.

For anglers, Greenland is one of the world's most exclusive destinations, particularly known for fishing for sea-run Arctic char in pristine rivers. The combination of low exploitation, strong fish stocks, and magnificent nature makes Greenland a unique destination for fishing trips.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes. Camp Isua has WiFi via Starlink satellite internet. The connection is unusually stable for being so far out in the Greenlandic wilderness and makes it possible to stay in touch with the outside world, send messages, manage emails, and share pictures from your fishing trip.

Keep in mind that the connection may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, but compared to traditional solutions in remote areas, Starlink works very well.

How do you fish in Greenland?

Fishing in Greenland primarily takes place in rivers and lakes, with a focus on sea-run Arctic char. It's an active and visual form of fishing in crystal-clear water, where you often see the fish before it bites. Both fly fishing and spin fishing are used, but fly fishing is the most common method in the rivers around Camp Isua.

For fly fishing, nymphs, streamers, and dry flies are used depending on water levels, temperature, and where the fish are located. In flowing sections, heavier nymphs or streamers are often used, while dry flies and lighter presentations work well in calmer pools and lake outlets. Spin fishing is done with spinners and spoons, always with single, barbless hooks according to local regulations.
In Greenland, we primarily practice catch and release, but a limited number of Arctic char are harvested for food at the camp. This is done in a controlled and sustainable manner, with great respect for the fish stocks and nature. The fish is prepared by our chefs and served fresh, often on the same day, providing an authentic taste of Greenland and becoming a cherished part of the experience.

This means you get to experience both world-class sport fishing and the genuine feeling of eating local fish in the heart of the Greenlandic wilderness.

How are the weather and climate?

The weather and climate in Greenland are an important part of the experience and affect both the fishing and the stay at the camp. During the fishing season, which runs from mid-July to early September, it is Arctic summer with long, bright days and midnight sun during parts of the period.

The temperature is usually between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, but can change rapidly. Sunny, clear days can feel surprisingly warm, while sudden changes in weather with wind, fog, and rain can occur. It is precisely this variation that makes Greenland feel alive and authentic, and contributes to the sense of wilderness.

Wind plays a significant role and can affect both boat transfers and fishing in the rivers, but our guides always adapt the day's plan to the prevailing conditions. With the right clothing, the climate is very pleasant for active fishing, and the cool temperatures allow you to fish long sessions without getting exhausted.
