fish species and bait choice
The Skeena River and its tributaries are considered one of the world's premier areas for fly fishing for anadromous species. Here, you can fish for some of North America's most iconic sport fish in large, flowing rivers and smaller technical tributaries.
The most sought-after species is the steelhead, known for its strength, aerial leaps, and unpredictable behavior. Steelhead are primarily fished with two-handed rods and are most effectively presented with tube flies and streamers in colors such as black and blue, purple, pink, orange, as well as natural combinations. Riffling hitch and surface presentations can be very effective under the right conditions, especially in tributaries like the Copper and Kalum River.
Chinook salmon is the world's largest salmon species and is fished during a limited but intense period. Here, larger flies and heavier sinking tips are used to reach the fish near the bottom. Patterns that imitate baitfish and shrimp in colors such as black, blue, purple, and chartreuse work very well. Hooking a Chinook on a fly is one of the most demanding and adrenaline-filled fishing encounters you can experience.
In addition to steelhead and Chinook, coho (silver salmon), sockeye, pink salmon, and chum salmon are also present in the system, depending on the season. Coho are aggressive and often take colorful streamers and smaller, high-contrast tube flies.
Steelhead are not particularly picky and will take most flies if presented well. However, some color combinations work better than others. Black/blue, pink/orange, and purple are good to have in your fly box. We prefer tube flies over regular flies, but the fish doesn't really care. Long, thin flies work better than large and clunky ones.
NOTE: Hooks must be barbless, and size 1 or 2 is best for steelhead. We crimp the barbs in place before fishing.
The most popular patterns are Bunny leech, Ken Morrish Trailer Trash, HOBO Spey, blue prom dress, and a small pink leech. Shrimp imitations also work very well. Bring some larger dry flies as an ace up your sleeve for the Copper River.
Simms ColdWeather Shirt - Neptune/Sun Glow Ombre Plaid / S is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.

Here, fishing in large river systems like the Skeena is combined with low exploitation, strict management, and a focus on sustainable fishing.
Canada is a safe and well-organized country with high standards for accommodation, guides, and infrastructure, even in remote areas. English is the main language in British Columbia, making the trip easy and smooth for international guests.

How do you fish in the Skeena River, Canada?
How do you fish in the Skeena River, Canada?
Fishing in the Skeena River varies with the season, species, and water flow. Steelhead are often caught with riffling hitch or surface flies, while king salmon require heavier flies and sinking tips near the bottom.
Two-handed rods of 13–14 feet in class 7–9 are most common in the wide main river, while smaller tributaries can be fished with lighter equipment. Skagit and Scandi lines with different tips are used to adjust the depth.
Steelhead are not particularly picky, but the right presentation is crucial. Slender flies in colors such as black/blue, pink/orange, and purple are classic choices. All fishing is done with barbless hooks.
What is the weather and climate like?
What is the weather and climate like?
The climate in the Skeena River area is varied and influenced by both coast and mountains. Spring and autumn can bring cool temperatures and shifting weather, while summer is often mild with pleasant daytime temperatures. Rain occurs year-round and is a natural part of the environment, which also contributes to good water flow in the rivers. Rapid weather changes are common, so layered clothing and rain protection are recommended while fishing.
