Fishing in Canada and the Skeena River

The Skeena River and its tributaries in British Columbia are considered one of the world's premier areas for fly fishing for anadromous fish. Here you will encounter large, powerful rivers, unspoiled wilderness, and fishing that demands technique, patience, and focus. Each day on the Skeena is unique and is affected by water levels, temperature, and fish migration patterns, making the fishing both challenging and extremely rewarding.

Steelhead fishing is the heart of the Skeena system and attracts fly fishers from all over the world. These fish are known for their strength, explosive runs, and unpredictable behavior. Fishing often involves two-handed rods, methodically covering large currents and deep pools. When a bite does come, it is often violent and memorable.

In addition to steelhead, the Skeena also offers some of the best fly fishing for Chinook salmon in the world. The Chinook salmon is the river's true powerhouse and requires heavy gear, proper presentation, and experienced guides. During peak season, enormous fish migrate up through the system, and every hooked salmon can become a battle that tests both equipment and angler to the absolute limit.

The summer season offers varied fishing with multiple species simultaneously, where the possibility of a "grand slam" attracts many. Coho, chum, and other salmon species move through the system alongside steelhead, creating dynamic and intense fishing.

The Lodge - Skeena River Lodge

We warmly recommend Skeena River Lodge to anyone who wants to combine first-class fly fishing in Canada with high comfort and personal service. The lodge is one of the most renowned in the steelhead world, offering a calm, exclusive atmosphere amidst the unspoiled nature of British Columbia. The main building is within comfortable walking distance of the Skeena River and overlooks a private casting pond, perfect for warming up or practicing technique.

Accommodation is in very nice single rooms or cabins with private bathrooms, providing both privacy and comfort after long days of fishing. The lodge features generous common areas, a bar and dining room, as well as relaxing facilities such as an outdoor jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna, much appreciated after a day on the river.

Food & Drink at the Lodge in Skeena

The food at Skeena River Lodge is an important part of the overall experience and is of very high quality. All meals are prepared by an internationally trained chef who combines local ingredients with classic and modern flavors. After long days on the river, well-prepared dinners await in the lodge's dining room, where the focus is on quality, variety, and generous portions.

Breakfast is served as a buffet or à la carte and provides a perfect start to the fishing day. Lunches are often eaten by the water and consist of hearty sandwiches, warm soups, and lighter dishes that provide energy during fishing. Snacks and drinks are also available throughout the day.

In the lodge's bar, you can relax in the evening with a drink and share the day's fishing stories in a relaxed atmosphere. Food and drinks at Skeena River Lodge are thoughtfully prepared, flavorful, and tailored for anglers who want both comfort and quality during their fishing trip in Canada.

fish species and bait choice

The Skeena River and its tributaries are considered one of the world's premier areas for fly fishing for anadromous species. Here, you can fish for some of North America's most iconic sport fish in large, flowing rivers and smaller technical tributaries.

The most sought-after species is the steelhead, known for its strength, aerial leaps, and unpredictable behavior. Steelhead are primarily fished with two-handed rods and are most effectively presented with tube flies and streamers in colors such as black and blue, purple, pink, orange, as well as natural combinations. Riffling hitch and surface presentations can be very effective under the right conditions, especially in tributaries like the Copper and Kalum River.

Chinook salmon is the world's largest salmon species and is fished during a limited but intense period. Here, larger flies and heavier sinking tips are used to reach the fish near the bottom. Patterns that imitate baitfish and shrimp in colors such as black, blue, purple, and chartreuse work very well. Hooking a Chinook on a fly is one of the most demanding and adrenaline-filled fishing encounters you can experience.

In addition to steelhead and Chinook, coho (silver salmon), sockeye, pink salmon, and chum salmon are also present in the system, depending on the season. Coho are aggressive and often take colorful streamers and smaller, high-contrast tube flies.

Steelhead are not particularly picky and will take most flies if presented well. However, some color combinations work better than others. Black/blue, pink/orange, and purple are good to have in your fly box. We prefer tube flies over regular flies, but the fish doesn't really care. Long, thin flies work better than large and clunky ones.

NOTE: Hooks must be barbless, and size 1 or 2 is best for steelhead. We crimp the barbs in place before fishing.
The most popular patterns are Bunny leech, Ken Morrish Trailer Trash, HOBO Spey, blue prom dress, and a small pink leech. Shrimp imitations also work very well. Bring some larger dry flies as an ace up your sleeve for the Copper River.

For sport fishermen, Canada is particularly attractive due to strong stocks of salmon, steelhead, trout, and other migratory species, especially in British Columbia. Here, fishing in large river systems like the Skeena is combined with low exploitation, strict management, and a focus on sustainable fishing.

Canada is a safe and well-organized country with high standards for accommodation, guides, and infrastructure, even in remote areas. English is the main language in British Columbia, making the trip easy and smooth for international guests.

Two-handed rods of 13–14 feet in class 7–9 are most common in the wide main river, while smaller tributaries can be fished with lighter equipment. Skagit and Scandi lines with different tips are used to adjust the depth.

Steelhead are not particularly picky, but the right presentation is crucial. Slender flies in colors such as black/blue, pink/orange, and purple are classic choices. All fishing is done with barbless hooks.

What is the weather and climate like?

The climate in the Skeena River area is varied and influenced by both coast and mountains. Spring and autumn can bring cool temperatures and shifting weather, while summer is often mild with pleasant daytime temperatures. Rain occurs year-round and is a natural part of the environment, which also contributes to good water flow in the rivers. Rapid weather changes are common, so layered clothing and rain protection are recommended while fishing.
