Fishing in Seychelles

Seychelles is one of the world's most sought-after destinations for tropical fly fishing, offering diverse fishing on flats, reef edges, and in the surf zone. Sight fishing is the focus here, where precision and correct presentation are crucial in the pursuit of some of the Indian Ocean's most coveted species.

Fly fishing in Seychelles is particularly renowned for Giant Trevally, but also offers good opportunities for Indo-Pacific permit, bonefish, triggerfish, bluefin trevally, and other predatory fish. The clear waters, vast pristine areas, and low fishing pressure create optimal conditions for intensive and rewarding fishing.

Fishing Season in Seychelles

The best fishing season extends from November to April. During this period, the weather is stable, the water is warm, and the fish are active on the flats. February and March are considered the most weather-reliable months and provide excellent conditions for fly fishing for GT, permit, and bonefish.

Local fishing guides

During your fishing trip to the Seychelles, you will fish with local fishing guides who grew up by these waters and have been fishing the islands and atolls since childhood. Their local knowledge is invaluable and makes a big difference when it comes to finding the right flats, reef edges, and fishing areas based on tides, weather, and current conditions.

Whether your goal is Giant Trevally, permit, bonefish, or other tropical species, our guides know exactly how to plan the fishing for the best possible chance of success. They are determined, responsive, and adapt the fishing to your level and ambitions.

The guides give you their full focus throughout the fishing trip and generously share their techniques, tactics, and experience. These are guides we are truly proud of and one of the main reasons our fishing trips to the Seychelles are of such high quality.

Accommodation in Seychelles

During the fishing trip, we live and travel on a Fountaine Pajot 35 catamaran, specially adapted for fishing in the Seychelles. The catamaran is built for a maximum of four anglers and combines good range, stability, and functionality, making it a perfect base for fishing far from civilization and a unique Liveaboard trip.

On board, there is a hybrid system that powers fans and air conditioning for high comfort even on hot days. The catamaran is equipped with a watermaker, extended fuel capacity, stabilizers, modern navigation equipment, and full safety equipment. The practical layout makes life on board comfortable both during fishing days and evenings at sea.

We use a modern maritime communication system that gives us access to updated weather forecasts several times daily. This ensures that our expeditions are always planned with the greatest possible consideration for safety, weather, and the best possible fishing.

Accommodation on the catamaran gives us the freedom to reach remote atolls and untouched fishing grounds, while you stay comfortably in the middle of one of the world's most spectacular fly-fishing areas.

Food & Drink in Seychelles

During the fishing trip to Seychelles, meals are served on board the catamaran with a focus on quality, variety, and local flavors. Meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, supplemented with snacks and drinks throughout the day, adapted to the fishing and daily schedule.

The menu combines fresh local ingredients with international classics. Fresh fish and seafood are a natural part of the diet, often accompanied by rice, vegetables, fruit, and spices that reflect Creole cuisine. Simple yet delicious dishes that are perfect after long days on the flats and reefs.

Water, soft drinks, and other non-alcoholic beverages are available on board throughout the stay. Alcoholic beverages can be brought along or purchased depending on the arrangement. All food is prepared and served on board, allowing you to enjoy good food and fellowship without leaving the fishing areas.

fish species and bait choice

Seychelles is one of the world's premier destinations for tropical fly fishing, offering extremely varied fishing on flats, reef edges, and in the surf zone. The right lure choice is crucial for success with the different species.

Giant Trevally (GT)
GT is the main target for many who travel to Seychelles. Fishing is done with large, voluminous flies tied on strong hooks in sizes 6/0–8/0. Colors such as black, black/purple, black/blue, tan, olive/white, and chartreuse/white are proven choices. When fish are cautious, Clouser Minnows in sizes 2/0–4/0, as well as larger crab, squid, and shrimp imitations, can be very effective. Variation in fly choice is often the key to success.

Triggerfish
Triggerfish are almost exclusively fished with crab imitations. Natural sand colors work best, and patterns like Flexo Crab and Itchy Trigger are very effective on the flats.

Bonefish
Bonefish are present in good numbers and are fished with classic bonefish flies such as Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, and Spawning Shrimp in sizes 4–8. Fishing often takes place as sight fishing on shallow sand flats.

Permit
Permit is one of the most challenging species. Crab patterns in sizes 2–6 are the first choice, but traditional bonefish patterns can also work with the right presentation.

Bluefin Trevally and Island Trevally
These species readily take Clouser Minnows in sizes 1/0–3/0 in colors such as chartreuse/white, tan/white, and olive/white. Unweighted baitfish imitations, as well as smaller shrimp and crab flies in sizes 2–6, can also be very effective.

Bohar Snapper
Bohar snapper are often caught as bycatch during GT fishing. Common GT flies work excellent, but smaller baitfish imitations adapted for trevally also yield good results.

Sailfish
Under the right conditions, there's a chance for sailfish. Baitfish and squid imitations are most common, often fished as tube flies with hooks in sizes 6/0–8/0.

Before a fishing trip to Seychelles

What fish species are found in the Seychelles?

Seychelles offers some of the world's most diverse and exciting tropical fly fishing. Here you primarily fish for Giant Trevally (GT), which is the main species for many travelers, but also Indo-Pacific permit, bonefish, triggerfish, bluefin trevally, and island trevally are found in very good numbers.

In addition to flats fishing, there's also a chance for larger predatory fish such as bohar snapper and, at the right times, even sailfish. The combination of shallow flats, reef edges, and open water makes Seychelles a complete destination for tropical fly fishing with great variety and the opportunity for truly memorable bites.

When should one go on a fishing trip to the Seychelles?

The best time for a fishing trip to the Seychelles is November to April. During this period, conditions are very stable for tropical warm-water fly fishing, with good visibility and favorable winds. February and March are often considered the most weather-reliable months and offer excellent chances for Giant Trevally, permit, bonefish, and triggerfish.

The Seychelles is a destination where the fishing remains high-level throughout the season, but the timing can be adjusted based on which species you want to prioritize. We are happy to help you choose the right period based on your goals and wishes.

Can I customize my fishing trip

Yes, absolutely. All our fishing trips to the Seychelles can be tailored to your wishes. You can customize the length of the trip, focus on specific fish species such as Giant Trevally, permit or bonefish, and choose whether you want to book the entire catamaran privately or travel in a smaller group.

We can also help you combine fly fishing with extra days ashore, hotel stays or other experiences if desired. With our long experience of fishing trips and local guides, we will put together a package that will give you maximum benefit from your adventure in the Seychelles.

Passport and visa information - Seychelles

For travel to Seychelles, a valid passport is required, valid for the entire duration of your stay. Swedish citizens do not need a visa in advance for tourist travel.

Upon arrival, a Visitor's Permit is granted free of charge, typically for up to 30 days. For this, you need to be able to show a valid passport, a return ticket or onward travel, and proof of accommodation.

It is always your responsibility to ensure your travel documents are valid before departure, but currently, entry to Seychelles is simple and straightforward for anglers and holidaymakers.

Facts about the country – Seychelles

Seychelles is an island republic in the Indian Ocean, east of Africa, consisting of 115 islands. The country is known for its tropical climate, pristine nature, and some of the world's best fishing waters for sport fishing.

The capital city is Victoria, located on the island of Mahé. The official languages are Creole, English, and French, and the currency is the Seychellois Rupee (SCR). English works perfectly for travellers.

For sport fishermen, Seychelles is one of the world's most renowned destinations for tropical popping and fly fishing, especially for species such as Giant Trevally. Many of the islands and atolls are sparsely populated or completely uninhabited, which results in low fishing pressure and very untouched environments.

Seychelles has a strong focus on sustainability and nature conservation, with large marine protected areas and regulations that favour catch-and-release fishing. The combination of a stable climate, clear waters, and rich biodiversity makes the country a dream destination for both fishing and adventure.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes. On board the catamaran, there is internet via Starlink, which provides a stable connection even far out among remote islands and atolls in the Seychelles. The connection is sufficient for messages, emails, and simple updates during the fishing trip, so you can stay in touch with the outside world even when you are far from civilization.

How do you fish in the Seychelles?

Fishing in Seychelles is primarily conducted as tropical fly fishing on shallow flats, reef edges, and in the surf zone. Most fishing is done as sight fishing, where you and your guide spot fish and visually present the fly to the species you are targeting.

The most common methods are wading on sand and coral flats for bonefish, permit, and triggerfish, as well as boat-based fishing near reefs and edges for Giant Trevally, bluefin trevally, and other predators. Presentation, timing, and the right fly choice are crucial, especially in clear water with wary fish.

Fishing is adapted to tides, weather, and species, and thanks to local guides with deep knowledge of the area, you always fish the spots that offer the best conditions for the day. Catch and release is standard and an obvious part of sustainable sport fishing in Seychelles.

What's the weather and climate like in the Seychelles?

The Seychelles have a tropical climate with consistent temperatures year-round. Daytime temperatures usually range between 26–32 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature is pleasant throughout the year, perfect for tropical fly fishing.

The climate is governed by two monsoon periods. November to April is characterized by warmer air, calmer winds, and more stable weather, providing excellent conditions for fishing on the flats and around the islands. May to October brings slightly drier weather and more wind, which can result in cooler temperatures and excellent fishing for certain species, especially around reefs and edges.

Thanks to the stable climate, it is possible to fish year-round in the Seychelles, but the choice of period depends on which species you want to target and what conditions you prefer.
