Fishing in Tjuonajokk

Fishing in Tjuonajokk takes place in some of the most classic parts of the Kaitum River and is known for its strong stock of grayling of good size. The river offers great variety with rapids, riffles, and calmer pools where dry fly fishing is often the first choice. In higher water or cooler periods, nymphs and smaller streamers can be very effective. In addition to grayling, there are also good opportunities for trout and occasional pike and perch for those who want to broaden their fishing.

The fishing season primarily spans July and August. At the beginning of the season, water levels are often higher, which provides interesting conditions for trout. As summer progresses, the levels stabilize and grayling fishing is of very high quality with regular hatches and excellent conditions for dry flies. Towards the end of August, the evenings become darker, and trout move closer to shore at dusk, creating new opportunities for varied fly fishing in the wilderness of Lapland.

Helicopter transfer to Camp Tjuonajokk

The camp can only be reached by helicopter from Kiruna Airport, which preserves the feeling of a remote wilderness and provides an exclusive start to your fishing trip. The flight time from Stockholm to Kiruna is approximately 1.5 hours, followed by a helicopter ride of about 20 minutes directly into the Lappish mountains.

The helicopter transfer means you arrive directly at the camp without long transfers or changes. All guests arrive rested, refreshed, and ready to fish from the very first moment. The helicopter journey is not only an efficient mode of transport but also a significant part of the experience, with mountains, rivers, and vast expanses stretching out below you on the way to Camp Tjuonajokk.

fishing guides and expanded fishing opportunities

In Tjuonajokk, we collaborate with experienced fishing guides who possess deep local knowledge of the river and surrounding waters. Our fishing guides are skilled at reading the water, adapting methods to prevailing conditions, and providing practical advice to enhance your fishing experience. Whether the focus is on dry fly fishing for grayling, nymph fishing in rapids, or streamer fishing for larger trout, our guides are there to maximize every fishing day.

Guiding takes place in small groups to foster tranquility, quality, and ample time on the water. The standard setup is four anglers per guide, but for those who desire even more personalized support, it's possible to book extended guiding with one guide for two anglers. This offers greater flexibility, more choices of sections, and the ability to fully tailor the pace to your preferences.

For those looking to broaden their experience further, extended fishing beyond traditional grayling fishing is also available. Pike fishing is arranged as special tours with a very limited number of participants per boat, ensuring high comfort and full focus on the fishing. Trout fishing can also be given extra attention during the right periods, especially in the evenings and in deeper parts of the river.

Together with our fishing guides, a fishing trip is created where each day is adapted to conditions and ambition. A personal, well-thought-out, and memorable fly-fishing experience in the wilderness of Lapland with Outside Travels.

fish species and bait choice

Fishing in Tjuonajokk is dominated by grayling, and the area is considered one of Europe's premier grayling waters. Grayling are found in dense populations and of very good size. In addition to grayling, there are also good opportunities for trout, especially in deeper sections and during periods of stronger water flow. Pike and perch are also present and offer variety for those who want to broaden their fishing experience.

Dry fly fishing is often the first choice, especially during stable summer conditions. Caddisflies, mayflies, and various types of terrestrial insects in sizes 10–18 work very well. In colder weather, higher water, or when fish are deeper, nymph fishing is an effective alternative. Use both unweighted nymphs and tungsten variants in sizes 10–16.

Streamers can be very effective, especially for trout. Natural colors, as well as black and white, are safe choices. In some situations, larger, articulated streamers can entice the larger fish. For pike fishing, heavier flies and equipment adapted for larger lures and tougher handling are used.

How do you fish in Tjuonajokk?

Fishing in Tjuonajokk is primarily done as fly fishing in flowing mountain rivers, focusing on grayling but also offering opportunities for trout, pike, and perch. The fishing is varied and adapted to water levels, weather, and fish activity.

Dry fly fishing is often the most used method, especially during stable summer conditions when grayling readily rise in riffles and calmer sections. Presentation and drift are crucial, and it pays to fish methodically and read the water carefully.

When the water is colder or higher, nymphing works very well, both in flowing sections and in deeper pools. Smaller streamers can also be effective, especially when targeting trout or when fish are not rising.

Fishing is largely done by wading, often in easily wadeable stretches, but also from shore depending on the location. With guidance, you will get help choosing the right method, fly, and pace for the day, making the fishing suitable for both beginners and experienced fly fishers.
