We got exactly the fishing we had hoped for. Grayling, trout, and rainbow trout in crystal clear water, where every fish felt well-deserved. Some rose calmly to the dry fly, while others we had to work a little extra for. Those are the fish you remember when you're back home.

We quickly realized that we were thinking a bit too big. The local ash trees were filled with really small flies, and it wasn't long before we did the same. Sometimes, it's actually the smallest flies that deliver the biggest smiles.

When the day's fishing was over, good food, cold local beers, and much laughter awaited us, shared with the guides. It is precisely the combination of the fishing, the nature, and the people that makes Bosnia such a delightful place to visit.
From Gothenburg to Ribnik
The journey from Gothenburg went smoothly, and just a few hours later, we were driving through Bosnia's high, green mountains. It's actually hard to believe how quickly the landscape changes. One moment you're at home in Sweden, and a few hours later, the road winds through valleys, forests, and small villages on the way to Ribnik.
When we arrived, we were met by our local guides who welcomed us with a glass of rakija, a tradition that has become an obvious start to our trips here. Afterwards, a really pleasant dinner awaited us in Ribnik with local dishes, a cold Bosnian beer, and plenty of time to talk about fishing for the week.
As the evening drew to a close, we checked into the cabins located right next to the river. The equipment was unpacked, fly boxes were opened, and it wasn't long before the conversation turned to tomorrow's first fishing session. With the Ribnik flowing just a few meters from the cabin, it wasn't easy to get to bed.
First day of fishing in Ribnik
After breakfast, it was finally time to head down to the river.
Once we arrived at Ribnik, it was hard to know where to look first. Crystal clear water, rising fish, and a river that looked just as inviting as we remembered it. Our pulses immediately quickened, and it was hard not to want to start fishing right away.
But first, we made a stop at the small local fly shop. Small is almost an understatement. Three adult anglers practically filled the entire store. There, we picked up our fishing licenses, checked out the local flies, and grabbed a few patterns that the guides recommended.
It was also a good reminder of how important it is to have the right flies with you in Bosnia. Here, people often fish with significantly smaller flies than many are used to, and the local patterns make a big difference. That's why we offer ready-made fly boxes for the trip, developed in collaboration with our local guides. This way, you don't have to take chances and can focus all your energy on fishing right from the first cast.
We started the morning with dry flies but also tried Euro nymphing. It wasn't long before the first beautiful grayling was in the net, and shortly after, a rainbow trout too. A perfect start to the week and proof that the guides knew exactly where we should begin.

Ribnik is known for its grayling and it wasn't long before we felt the first one. Strong fish, beautiful fins, and a fishing experience where every presentation counts.

The cottages
During this trip, we stayed in cabins right next to the Ribnik. It was hard not to go down to the river for an extra visit in the evening or start the morning with a cup of coffee and a view of the water.

Ready and rigged
Our class 3 rods stood rigged and ready on the car with small dry flies, nymphs, and some streamers prepared for the next water. When the guides found a new stretch, it was just a matter of jumping out of the car and starting to fish.

On our fishing trips in Bosnia, we primarily fish for grayling, where fish between 35 and 70 cm are entirely possible. The native brown trout can grow very large, with fish up to 10 kg, and there are also plenty of large rainbow trout that offer tough fights in the flowing rivers.
For those seeking an even greater challenge, Bosnia also offers fishing for the legendary Hucho hucho (Danube salmon). During the right season, it is possible to target one of Europe's largest salmonids, which can grow over a meter long.
