Mongolia is one of the world's last truly untouched fly-fishing adventures. Deep within the Siberian taiga, the legendary rivers Sisegid and Tengis flow through broad valleys, ancient larch forests, and crystal-clear waters where the sense of wilderness is absolute.

Here, you'll find fishing for Taimen, the world's largest salmonid and one of the most mythical species in sport fishing. Known as the "River Wolf," the Taimen offers brutal strikes, explosive surface attacks, and fights that will make your pulse race. A single strike can become a lifelong memory.

In addition to Taimen, you'll also fish for Lenok and Grayling in varied waters where each day offers new opportunities. One moment you might be casting large streamers along deep pools, the next you'll see a grayling elegantly rising to a dry fly.

In the heart of this enormous wilderness, you'll stay comfortably in riverside camps directly by the river. There are no roads, no cell reception, and no distractions. Just flowing water, campfires, and a starlit sky that feels endless.

This is more than a fishing trip. It's an adventure far from the ordinary, for those who want to experience fly fishing in its most genuine form.

Fishing in Mongolia

Deep within the wilderness of northern Mongolia, rivers flow through vast forests, open valleys, and crystal-clear waters where the feeling of solitude is absolute. Here, there are no roads, no mobile coverage, and no other anglers around the corner. Just you, the river, and the chance to hook one of the world's most legendary fish species.

Taimen – the river wolf

Taimen, or Hucho taimen, is the world's largest salmonid and the obvious main species during the trip. Locals often call it the "River Wolf" due to its aggressive behavior as a top predator in the river system.

This is not a high-volume fishery. A good week often involves only a few opportunities, but when a large taimen bites, your perception of what fly fishing can be quickly changes.

Taimen are known for brutal strikes and spectacular surface attacks. Fishing is often done with large streamers, mouse imitations, and waking flies skated across the surface. Seeing a massive fish wake behind your fly before the strike is an experience many never forget.

The average taimen caught is around 80 cm and about 4–5 kilograms, but significantly larger fish over a meter are also caught every week. The dream fish of 120–150 cm is always a realistic possibility.

Grayling, Lenok, and Pike

Although taimen is the main goal, Mongolia offers varied fly fishing for several species.

Lenok are often fished in flowing water where dry flies, terrestrials, and smaller streamers work very well. Grayling offer technical and entertaining dry fly fishing and are found in good numbers in the rivers.

In some waters, pike are also present, providing additional variety during the week.

Catch and release in protected waters

Fishing takes place in a strictly protected area where all fishing is catch and release. Only single barbless hooks are allowed to ensure a sustainable stock and preserve this unique fishery for future generations.

Lodge, food and camp life

Deep within the Mongolian wilderness, you'll stay comfortably in riverside camps directly by the river. Here, a warm and authentic lodge atmosphere awaits you in the heart of the taiga, far from roads, people, and everyday life.

After long days by the water, the group gathers for good food, stories from the day's fishing, and planning for tomorrow. The food is rustic, traditional, and prepared with care, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included throughout your stay.

The accommodation is tailored for anglers and combines a sense of adventure with comfort. You stay close to the fishing, surrounded by crystal-clear water, mighty forests, and that special feeling of being far away from everything else.

Equipment and Flies

For most situations, a single-handed fly rod in class #8–#9, around 9 feet, works very well. It is powerful enough to cast large streamers and surface flies, yet comfortable to fish with for long days. For truly large fish or more demanding conditions, rods in class #9–#12 and up to 15 feet may be appropriate.

Switch rods around class #8 and approximately 11 feet are a good complement, especially when fishing with really large flies that imitate small mammals. With a two-handed grip, casting becomes both easier and gentler on the body.

The reel should be well-balanced with the rod, with a strong and smooth drag, and space for at least 150 meters of backing. Low weight is an advantage because fishing involves a lot of casting.

The line can preferably be slightly overweight with an aggressive taper, which helps load the rod and turn over large, wind-sensitive flies. Floating lines are mostly used, but a sinking tip line in the range of 250–350 grains is valuable in deeper sections.

Leaders and tippets are relatively simple. Taimen are apex predators and not particularly shy, so straight fluorocarbon leaders work very well. Dimensions around 0.40–0.60 mm (approximately 20–40 lb) are standard. Feel free to bring extra spools in these dimensions for flexibility.

For species like lenok and grayling, lighter fly fishing equipment, such as class #5–#6, is sufficient, providing a more nuanced and enjoyable fishing experience.

In summary, the equipment is all about balance – sufficient power for large flies and strong fish, while also being durable and comfortable for many hours of active fishing every day.

Both dry flies on the surface and streamer fishing work very well for taimen. Seeing a taimen attack a fly on the surface is something that quickly becomes addictive – they can strike the same fly repeatedly. Large poppers, gurglers, imitations of mice, and injured baitfish often trigger aggressive strikes.

Taimen feed primarily on trout and grayling, making large streamers a safe bet. Colors that mimic these prey work best – white, beige, and gray – but black is also effective as it creates a clear silhouette in the water.

Unlike much other fly fishing, it's rarely about "matching the hatch," which gives great freedom at the vise for those who want to tie their own flies.

However, perhaps the most important component of a taimen fly is the hook. The species has a very hard mouth, and just like tarpon, it can be difficult to hook. A strong hook with a wide gap (approximately 2/0–4/0) is crucial, and even more important is that it is truly sharp. The sharper the hook, the greater the chance of successfully landing the fish.
