About the fishing trip

Sea fishing in Greenland | Untouched waters and Camp Nataarnaq

Sea fishing in Greenland is still largely unexploited, and we are among the first to truly explore these waters. There is an abundance of halibut, spotted wolffish, large cod, and impressive-sized redfish (uer) here.

Fishing is conducted from stable and well-adapted 20-foot boats with four anglers and one guide per boat. One day, the focus might be on heavy halibut fishing, the next day we target spotted wolffish or large cod. Variety, flexibility, and adaptation to weather and conditions are a natural part of the plan.

Beyond fishing, the area offers powerful nature experiences. Whales, seals, seabirds, and white-tailed eagles are often seen in the fjords, contributing to the feeling of being far away from everyday life.

Sea fishing in Greenland is completely different from what we are used to in the Nordics. Here you are met by enormous fjords, dramatic mountains, and waters that have virtually never been systematically fished. It is precisely this that makes fishing at Camp Nataarnaq so special. You fish in areas where the fish are not shy, where stocks are strong, and where every drop can result in something truly big.

For those with extensive experience in sea fishing in Northern Norway who want to take the next step, this is a natural progression. The same powerful species, but in an environment that is larger, wilder, and significantly more untouched. Here there is space to fish at a calm pace, adapt methods to the day, and truly make the most of every fishing trip.

Fishing in Greenland

Sea fishing in Greenland differs significantly from most of what we are used to in the Nordics. Here you fish in enormous fjords and coastal sea areas that are largely completely untouched. The fishing pressure is extremely low and the stocks are strong, which creates a sea fishing experience that feels raw, powerful, and genuine.

At Camp Nataarnaq, we fish in varied environments with deep cliffs, plateaus, and softer bottoms where several sought-after species occur in very good sizes. Halibut is one of the main attractions and is frequently found in the area. There are also plenty of spotted wolffish here, a species that attracts many experienced sea anglers thanks to its size and tough fights.

In addition to this, there are large quantities of big cod and a stable stock of redfish (uer) which are often fished in deeper waters. The species complement each other well and allow the fishing to be varied day by day, both in terms of methods, depth, and pace.

Sea fishing in Greenland is not just about quantity and size, but about the feeling of fishing in waters where the fish are not pressured and where every bite can be something out of the ordinary. For those looking for the next step after classic Northern Norwegian sea fishing, this is an experience that truly stands out.

Accommodation in Greenland

Accommodation at Camp Nataarnaq is a central part of the experience, combining a wilderness feel with unexpected comfort. The camp is an exclusive glamping camp located completely on its own, far from communities and other human presence, with views of the fjord and the Greenlandic wilderness.

You will stay in spacious accommodation tents, with two people sharing each tent. Each tent is equipped with proper beds, a heating stove, reindeer hides, and ample space for personal belongings. Despite its remote location, the accommodation maintains a high standard and is designed to ensure you can rest properly after long days at sea.

The camp has communal facilities with electricity, running hot water, toilet, and shower, as well as a larger tent for meals and social gatherings. Here, the group gathers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, prepared by the camp's own chef with a focus on local ingredients and Greenlandic flavors.

Accommodation at Camp Nataarnaq is designed for those who want to experience Greenland authentically, without sacrificing comfort. A place where tranquility, nature, and community become a natural part of your fishing trip.

Food & drink in Greenland

Food is an important part of the experience at Camp Nataarnaq and something that many guests highlight as one of the trip's big positives. Despite being far out in the Greenlandic wilderness, well-planned and well-cooked meals are served every day.

The camp's own chef prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on local ingredients and Greenlandic specialties. The food is nutritious, flavorful, and adapted for active fishing days at sea. Ingredients from the sea and the region are combined with classic favorites that provide energy and recovery.

Meals are served in the communal dining tent where the group gathers after the day's fishing. These become natural moments for conversation, reflection, and community. A calm contrast to intensive fishing sessions and grand nature experiences.

Drinks are included with meals in the form of non-alcoholic options. Alcoholic beverages can be brought and are most easily purchased in Nuuk before departure to the camp. Our staff will clearly inform you about what is good to buy before your stay.

Food and drink in Greenland are not about abundance but about quality, care, and the whole experience. An important part of the experience that allows you to fully focus on the fishing, nature, and the feeling of being far away from everyday life.

fish species and bait choice

Sea fishing at Camp Nataarnaq in Greenland offers several powerful species in very impressive sizes. The low fishing pressure means that the fish are strong, aggressive, and often willing to take the bait.

Halibut is one of the main attractions and is fished with both heavy jigs and bait. Rubber jigs weighing around 200–500 grams work very well, fished close to the bottom or actively through the water column. In shallower areas, lighter jigs around 100–200 grams fished more actively can result in brutal strikes.

Spotted wolffish are abundant and are a species that truly tests your gear. Deadbaiting is very effective here, preferably baited with pieces of smaller cod. Stable bottom contact and patience often yield results.

Cod are plentiful and are caught with both lures and jigs. Classic lures between 200 and 1000 grams work excellently, especially when fishing along drop-offs and deep edges. Cod are strong and put up a tough fight.

Redfish (uer) are primarily fished in deeper waters, and here, a rubber lure is a must. This species provides fun and different fishing and is a perfect complement to the larger predatory fish.

A varied selection of baits and rigs gives you the best chances of success. Fishing in Greenland is about adapting your method to the species and location, and with the help of local guides, you will receive the right guidance for the day. Here, you will experience sea fishing that is powerful, unpredictable, and memorable.

How do you fish in Greenland?

At Camp Nataarnaq, we fish in pristine areas with very low fishing pressure, resulting in strong stocks and active fish.

Fishing takes place from stable boats and is adapted to weather and conditions. Common methods are jigging, pilking, and angling, depending on the target species. Halibut are often fished near the bottom with jigs or bait, while cod and redfish are caught with pilks and soft plastics. Spotted wolffish are primarily caught by angling.

What are the weather and climate like in Greenland?

The weather in Greenland is characterized by an Arctic coastal climate, but during the sea fishing season, conditions are often more stable than many expect. In summer, temperatures are usually cool and pleasant, often between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius, depending on wind and weather conditions.

In the fjords where fishing takes place, the sea is often calmer than on the open water, but weather changes can occur quickly.
