Fishing in Andfjorden and Gavlfjorden

Around Risøyhamn, you have two classic Northern Norway fjords within reach.

Andfjorden is a deep fjord between Andøya and Hinnøya, known for its rich marine life. The conditions here are right for both large cod fights and giant-sized halibut. Haddock, pollock, redfish, and more species can be hunted in the same waters.

Gavlfjorden is also adjacent to Andøya, somewhat smaller but with equally genuine conditions. Surrounded by majestic mountains, the fjord offers steady fishing for cod, pollock, haddock, halibut, wolfish, monkfish, and ling.

With your own boat, you have the freedom to switch between the fjords depending on the day's weather and what has been biting best in recent days.

Fishing Season

April–May. The time of big fish. Focus on large cod, big halibut, and wolfish. Cold water, heavy fish, intense fights.

June–August. Midnight sun and active fishing. Halibut hunts on shallower plateaus and can be reached with spinning jigs – some of the most exciting fishing there is. Cod bites steadily, and large pollock come up to the shallow peaks. Good period for redfish.

September–October. Halibut goes shallow, which opens up for spinning in sandy coves and on flat plateaus. Also prime time for plaice.

All season. Monkfish, ling, coalfish, haddock, wolfish, and tusk are fished year-round.

Seahouses and apartments by Andfjorden

At the camp, you stay in newly built, fresh boathouses or apartments – all with panoramic views of Andfjorden and Risøykanalen. The standard is consistently high, with well-equipped kitchens, TV, and free Wi-Fi. Laundry and drying facilities are available in the main building. The nearest grocery store is 150 meters away.

Boathouses (6 units, 66 sqm)
Two floors, living room, bathroom, two bedrooms with four single beds, exterior storage room. Perfect for a group of four friends.

Large Boathouses (2 units, 112 sqm)
Two floors, living room, bathroom, four bedrooms with eight single beds, exterior storage room. For larger groups.

Apartments (4 units, 71–82 sqm)
Living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and exterior storage room. Space for five or six people.

Food on site

Two options: cook for yourself in the well-equipped kitchen (shop 150 meters away), or book our ready-made meal package for anglers – breakfast, a packed lunch to put together at the accommodation, and a hot dinner delivered to your cabin every evening.

After twelve hours at sea, option two usually wins.

Boat and guide

You have access to a Kværnø 680 (23 feet, 115 hp) throughout your stay – a stable, seaworthy boat built for Northern Norway conditions. Refueling takes place at our own pump by the jetty.

Do you want to maximize your fishing or are you new to Northern Norwegian waters? Book a local fishing guide as an add-on. Our guides know about the weather, wind, season, and what has been fishing best in recent days.

Frequently asked questions about the fishing trip to Risøyhamn

When is the best time for sea fishing in Vesterålen?

April–May for big fish, June–August for quantity fishing and midnight sun, September–October for shallow halibut fishing and plaice. The whole season works – the choice depends on what you're after.

What fish can I catch?

Do I need a fishing license?

No, sea fishing in Norway is free for tourists within certain catch limits. We will inform you about the applicable rules before departure.

How much fish can I take home?

15 kg of fish per person, up to twice a year (reduced to 10 kg from 2027). The camp is a registered tourist fishing business, so you will receive the necessary documentation upon departure.

Facts about Norway as a sport fishing destination

Norway is one of the world's premier countries for sea fishing. Long coastlines, deep fjords, and cold, nutrient-rich waters create conditions that few other places can match – and Vesterålen is right in the hottest zone.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes. Free Wi-Fi is included in all sea houses and apartments. The coverage is stable – you can stay in touch with family, stream fishing videos in the evening, or upload pictures of the day's catch without any problems.

How do you fish in Vesterålen?

Fishing takes place from our own boat in Andfjorden and Gavlfjorden, usually at depths between 30 and 300 meters depending on the species and season. The most common methods are jigging with metal jigs and soft plastics weighing 100–500 g for cod, saithe, and halibut. If you want to actively hunt for halibut, spinning with a jig on shallower plateaus works well – it's one of the most enjoyable ways to fish in Northern Norway. For redfish, a rubber worm is used, and in autumn you can spin fish for plaice on sandy bottoms.

How are the weather and climate?

The climate in Frovåg, Senja, is typical of Northern Norway, with fresh winds, clear air, and changeable weather. During the fishing season from April to September, temperatures usually range between 8 and 18 degrees Celsius – but some days offer brilliant sunshine and over 20 degrees.

When the sun warms the fjords and the sea is calm, fantastic fishing days await. At the same time, the sheltered coves mean it's almost always possible to find good fishing regardless of the weather. It's a good idea to pack layers and waterproof clothing, so you'll be ready for all conditions. The weather can change quickly!
