Fishing in Kalmarsund

Kalmarsund offers one of Sweden's most unique perch fisheries. Here, the fish are often in very shallow water, sometimes only 50 cm deep and rarely deeper than 2 meters. This gives the perch perfect conditions and makes fishing both visual and incredibly fun.

There's great variety. You can fish classically with shad jigs, use special rigs, or switch to hard baits when you want to trigger reactions. The more you dare to experiment, the greater your chance of finding the really big ones.

Best fishing season for perch fishing in Kalmarsund

June 1st – end of February.
This period offers fantastic opportunities to adapt your fishing to the season and the perch:

Summer:
Fast presentations with chatterbaits, jigs, and hard baits.

Autumn:
A broad fishery where shad jigs, drop shot, Ned rigs, jerkbaits, and similar methods deliver really well.

Winter:
The perch clump together and fishing becomes slower, but this is often when the biggest specimens are caught.

Bait choice for perch fishing in Kalmarsund

Kalmarsund is primarily known for its strong perch population, but the area also offers excellent pike fishing for those who want to vary their catch. The shallow environment, often between 50 cm and 2 meters, means that both species are close to structures, vegetation, and edges where baitfish move. This creates an active and easy-to-understand fishery suitable for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Effective baits for perch in Kalmarsund

Bait selection is an important part of fishing, and in Kalmarsund, several techniques work depending on the season and the fish's activity.

During the summer, the following work particularly well:

  • Chatterbaits – perfect for speed and reaction strikes.
  • Fast-fished jigs – trigger active fish in shallow water.
  • Hard baits such as crankbaits and jerkbaits – good when perch are hunting baitfish.

In autumn, the fishing expands and several baits deliver:

  • Shad jigs
  • Drop shot
  • Ned rigs
  • Jerkbaits
  • Small hard baits

The focus for most sport fishermen is perch and pike, but the sound offers a broad and vibrant fish fauna all year round.

When should one go on a fishing trip to Kalmar Sound?

You can go to Kalmarsund from June to February, and each period has its strengths. Summer offers fast-paced shallow fishing with aggressive perch. Autumn is when many of the largest fish are caught, perfect for those hunting for really big perch. During winter, the fish gather in groups and fishing becomes slower but often very rewarding. Facts about the country

Kalmarsund is located on the Swedish east coast, between the mainland and Öland. The area belongs to Sweden and is characterized by coastal archipelago environments, shallow bays, and a rich marine ecosystem, making it perfect for sport fishing. It has a Nordic climate with warm summers, milder autumns, and cold winters. Sweden uses Swedish Krona as its currency, and power outlets are of European standard. It is easy to travel here by car, train, and plane depending on where you come from, and the area is known for its nature, tranquility, and strong populations of perch and pike.

Is there Wi-Fi on site?

Yes, there is Wi-Fi in all rooms. You can easily stay in touch with family and friends, upload photos from today's fishing trip, and plan your next excursion directly from your accommodation.

How do you fish in Kalmarsund?

In Kalmarsund, fishing is almost always shallow, often at depths between 50 centimeters and two meters. This makes the fishing both visual and varied. The most common methods are jig fishing with light jig heads, drop shot, Ned rig, and various finesse methods when the fish are lethargic. During warmer periods, chatterbaits, hard baits, and fast-fished jigs work very well. In autumn and winter, jerkbaits and slow bottom fishing are often the key. With a local fishing guide like Fredrik Renz, your chances increase significantly as he knows how the fishing changes day by day and helps you choose the right method for that particular day.

How are the weather and climate?

Kalmarsund has a coastal climate that changes significantly throughout the year. Summer offers warm days and stable weather, suitable for fast and active fishing. Autumn is cooler and often clearer, which makes large perch hunt more intensely. During winter, it gets colder and fishing is slower, but the chance of catching truly large fish is at its greatest. Wind direction and temperature play a significant role in the strait, and a local fishing guide like Fredrik Renz will help you understand how the weather affects fish behavior on that particular day.
