fish species and bait choice
Fishing trips to Madagascar offer hard-fighting species such as Giant Trevally (GT), various trevally species, amberjack, and many more predatory fish. To succeed with tropical fishing and popper fishing in the Indian Ocean, heavy rods in the PE6–PE8 class and braided line between 58–100 lbs with a strong shock leader are recommended. Stickbaits and poppers are key lures for GT, with poppers weighing 100–200 grams creating large splashes and triggering aggressive bites. When fish are cautious, stickbaits 15–25 cm long work perfectly for a softer presentation. Speed and slow jigging are also very effective techniques, especially in deeper spots where jigs weighing 150–300 grams yield results on species like amberjack and other true powerhouses.
With the right equipment, good lure selection, and the guides' local knowledge, you have a good chance of success!
Daiwa Saltiga SK Jig 250g Sardine is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.

Madagascar offers truly varied tropical sport fishing. Here you can catch:
- Giant Trevally (GT)
- Bluefin trevally and five spotted trevally
- Sailfish
- Amberjack
- Mahi-mahi
- Spanish mackerel
- Groupers of several species
In addition, there's a chance to catch many other predatory fish when jigging in deep water or fishing around the reefs – you never know what will bite next.
When should you go on a fishing trip to Madagascar?
When should you go on a fishing trip to Madagascar?
The best time for fishing in Madagascar is March to June and September to early December. During these periods, the weather is stable and fishing is at its most active, with a good chance of catching species such as GT, sailfish, amberjack, and bluefin trevally.
We do not recommend travel from December to February due to a higher risk of rain and bad weather.
Can I customize my fishing trip?
Can I customize my fishing trip?

Passport and Visa Information
Passport and Visa Information
Yes, you need both a passport and a visa to travel to Madagascar. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return date and have space for entry and exit stamps. You can easily obtain a visa either as a visa on arrival at the airport or by applying for an e-visa in advance. For a typical fishing trip, a tourist visa covering your entire stay is sufficient. We are happy to assist with pre-departure information so that everything is ready and smooth when you travel.
Facts about the country
Facts about the country
Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island, located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. The country is known for its unique nature, where a large proportion of its plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world. The coasts offer a tropical climate all year round, while the inland and high plateau are slightly cooler. Here you will encounter a relaxed culture, proximity to the sea, and a landscape that shifts between rainforest, coral reefs, and white beaches.
The journey begins on the island of Nosy Be in northern Madagascar. Here, you'll get a smooth start to your adventure with good hotels, restaurants, and proximity to the airport. Nosy Be is known for its beaches, markets, and tropical nature, serving as a perfect starting point before the fishing trip begins.
The tour then continues to a more untouched part of Madagascar, the island of Mitsio in the Mitsio archipelago. With fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, the feeling of seclusion is complete. The island is surrounded by fish-rich reefs, clear waters, and dramatic rock formations. The accommodation is located by a long sandy beach where you are often alone with the sea, waves, and the rustling of palm trees. Mitsio is the perfect place for those who want to get away from it all and experience both authentic nature and first-class tropical fishing.
Together, Nosy Be and Mitsio create a perfect combination, offering both comfort and a rawer, wilder adventure, from the first step at the airport to the last popping strikes out at sea.
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Yes, there is WiFi at the lodge. From 2026, the lodge will be equipped with Starlink, providing significantly faster and more stable internet connectivity compared to before. This means you can easily send messages, share photos, and in many cases, even use more data-intensive services.
However, please note that we are still on a remote island, so the connection may be affected by weather and network load. If you want to ensure connectivity throughout your trip, a local eSIM can be a good complement when you are on Nosy Be.
How do you fish in Madagascar?
How do you fish in Madagascar?
Fishing in Madagascar is active and explosive. With poppers and stickbaits, you hunt GTs along reef edges, where big splashes and hard "pops" trigger brutal surface strikes. In deeper spots, jigging is effective – either fast speed-jigging or more controlled slow-jigging for species like amberjack. Trolling is used on the way between spots and can yield sailfish and other fast-swimming species.
Intense fishing, fast bites, just as tropical fishing should be.
What is the weather and climate like?
What is the weather and climate like?
In Madagascar, you'll experience a warm tropical climate all year round. Temperatures often range between 25–32°C, and the sea maintains a pleasant swimming temperature. During fishing season, the weather is stable with sunny days and a comfortable sea breeze, making it feel cooler out on the boat. Evenings are warm and perfect for relaxing after a day of fishing.
