Lures and rigs for black bass in Sardinia

Black bass are aggressive, explosive and acrobatic, and in Sardinia they are usually found in shallow water, from the surface down to around five metres. This makes the fishing visual and action-packed. That’s why lure selection is largely about fishing close to structure.

The trip at a glance

  • Destination: a lake in Sardinia with a 4-star hotel and pool
  • Best time: April, June and September to October
  • Species: black bass, mostly 0.5 to 2 kilos
  • Method: jon boats with electric motors, local guide on the first day
  • Groups: 1 to 5 people
  • Travel: fly to Costa Smeralda and approximately 40 minutes by car

Near structure: Texas rig, dropshot and wacky rig

The bass are found by rocks, fallen trees, shoals and in bays, waiting to ambush their prey. Near this kind of structure, the classic bass rigs are obvious choices:

  • Texas rig
  • Dropshot
  • Wacky rig
  • Jigs and creature baits

The bass are often found in shallow water along edges and structure.

Active fish: topwater lures and swimbaits

When the bass are hunting, it’s time to bring out the topwater lures. Poppers and walk-the-dog lures produce the most spectacular strikes, while swimbaits work well when the fish are chasing baitfish just below the surface.

Colours

Natural colours are usually best. But since the bass here eat a lot of crayfish, crayfish colours in black/blue and purple are particularly effective, especially on rigs fished close to the bottom.

Time of day

In summer, mornings and evenings are best, when it’s cooler and the fish are hunting in shallow water. In spring and autumn, you can fish effectively all day.

The fight

The strikes are hard and are often followed by fast runs and jumps across the surface. Most fish weigh between 0.5 and 2 kilos, but bass weighing over both 2 and 3 kilos are caught every year.

Guiding on the first day

On the first day of fishing, you’ll have a local guide who will go over the lake and the techniques that are working at the time. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and try different rigs before fishing on your own.

You can read about the lake, hotel and season in the article about bass fishing in Sardinia.
