Fishing trip Costa Rica – a complete guide to fishing in Drake Bay

Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula is one of the most fish-rich areas along the Pacific coast. Here, jungle rivers, coastal reefs, and the open sea converge in a way that creates conditions for fishing that are hard to find anywhere else. Outside Travels now offers complete fishing trips to Costa Rica with Drake Bay as its base.

Why Drake Bay

The Osa Peninsula is one of the world's most biodiverse coastlines. Drake Bay is located in the heart of this area and has everything an angler could wish for. Its proximity to Caño Island, several river estuaries, and strong ocean currents mean that baitfish and predatory fish gather here all year round.

What makes Drake Bay extra special is the combination of inshore and offshore fishing within short distances. One day you might be fishing close to shore for roosterfish along the coastline, the next day you're out in the deep for sailfish and marlin. Every day on the water is different.

Roosterfish — the coast's iconic predator

The roosterfish is the reason many choose Costa Rica. It is iconic, powerful, and caught near shore with poppers and baitfish along the coastline. In Drake Bay, there are good chances of catching fish over 20 kilos, and strikes can be explosive.

Fishing often takes place near the shore where roosterfish hunt baitfish in the surf zone between sea and land. It is a visual and intense fishery where the bite often occurs just below the surface. Most fish are released.

Cubera snapper — heavy fishing over the reefs

For those who want something heavier, cubera snapper await over the reefs. This is a completely different kind of fishing than for roosterfish. Here, the goal is to get down to the bottom, hold on, and not give the fish a chance to run into the structure.

The strike is brutal, and the fight is often decided in the first few seconds. Cubera snapper in Drake Bay can weigh well over 20 kilograms and are one of the most sought-after bottom species along the Pacific coast.

Sailfish — one of the ocean's fastest fish

Sailfish is one of the most sought-after species in Drake Bay. The fish is fast, jumps high, and takes line at a furious pace once it bites. An encounter with a sailfish is something you won't soon forget.

Fishing takes place offshore with trolling and artificial lures. During the right period, from December to March, you can have many hookups per day with fish weighing up to 60 to 70 kilos. Fishing is exclusively catch and release.

Inshore fishing — close to shore and full of life

The inshore fishing in Drake Bay is varied and active. Along the coast and around reefs and rocky structures, you'll find roosterfish, cubera snapper, jack crevalle, and grouper. Fishing is done with poppers, jigs, and live bait depending on the species and conditions.

The short distances mean you'll be on the fish quickly. The guides know the waters well and know where currents and schools of baitfish create the right conditions for successful fishing.

Offshore Fishing — Out to the Deep

Offshore fishing in Drake Bay is as varied as inshore. Here you fish for sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, wahoo, and yellowfin tuna with trolling and poppers targeting chasing schools. During the right period, you can have many contacts per day with sailfish jumping and running.

Sailfish are at their strongest from December to March. Marlin are best fished from December to April. Yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi are available for large parts of the year.
