Komodo is one of Indonesia's most renowned destinations for tropical sport fishing. The area is characterized by nutrient-rich ocean currents, steep underwater edges, and extensive coral reefs, creating excellent conditions for diverse fishing for some of the Indian Ocean's most sought-after species.

The destination is primarily known for its Giant Trevally (GT) fishing, but there are also good opportunities to catch Bluefin Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Red Bass, and several other tropical predatory fish here.

What makes Komodo unique are its strong tidal currents. The fish live and hunt constantly in this flowing environment, contributing to their renowned strength and explosiveness. Every strike therefore becomes a challenge where both equipment and technique are put to the test.

The most common fishing methods are popping and stickbait fishing, where strikes often occur on the surface just a few meters from the boat. Under certain conditions, very effective jigging is also practiced over deeper reefs and seamounts.

You will fish with experienced local guides who know the waters inside out and adapt the fishing to tides, weather, and current conditions.

In addition to fishing, the area offers snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, rich marine life, and the opportunity to visit Komodo National Park with its unique wildlife.

With small groups, well-equipped boats, and a focus on sustainable sport fishing, this trip is suitable for both experienced tropical anglers and those who want to experience one of the world's most exciting fishing areas for the first time.

Fishing on Komodo

Komodo, Indonesia, is one of the world's most highly regarded tropical sportfishing destinations and has become a clear choice for anglers looking for top-class fishing for Giant Trevally (GT). The area is also known for its diverse fishing for species such as Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Bluefin Trevally, Amberjack, Grouper, and various Snapper species, meaning almost every fishing day offers new opportunities.

What makes Komodo unique is the interaction between the islands' topography and the strong tidal currents. As the water masses are forced through narrow straits, large quantities of nutrients are transported over reefs, shallow areas, and underwater mountains. This attracts enormous numbers of baitfish, which in turn creates perfect hunting conditions for the area's predatory fish. Understanding how the currents change throughout the day is an important part of fishing, and guides continuously plan the day's fishing based on tides and current conditions.

The most classic method is popping and stickbait fishing for Giant Trevally. Casts are placed close to reef edges, current eddies, and shallow plateaus where GTs patrol in search of their next meal. Strikes often occur explosively on the surface, and it is not uncommon for a large GT to attack the lure just a few meters from the boat. For many, this visual fishing is one of the main reasons to travel to Komodo.

The fishing places high demands on both equipment and anglers. A large Giant Trevally almost always tries to return to the reef immediately after striking, meaning the first few seconds often determine whether the fish is landed or not. Strong rods, tightly set drags, and the right technique are therefore crucial when the dream fish finally bites.

In addition to surface fishing, Komodo offers very effective jigging fishing over deeper reefs, edges, and underwater mountains. Here, both speed jigging and slow pitch jigging are practiced for species such as Dogtooth Tuna, Amberjack, Grouper, and other bottom-dwelling predatory fish. The combination of explosive surface attacks and heavy fights from the depths ensures that the fishing maintains high intensity throughout the day.

Beyond the fantastic fishing, Komodo is also one of Indonesia's most spectacular natural areas. The dramatic islands, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine biodiversity create an experience that extends far beyond the fishing itself. It is precisely the combination of nature, variety, and the opportunity to catch some of the world's strongest predatory fish that makes many return to Komodo year after year.

Accommodation and food

During your fishing trip to Komodo, you will be staying at Bintang Flores Hotel in Labuan Bajo. The hotel is located by the beach with sea views and is close to the city's restaurants. Here you will stay in spacious rooms with modern standards and have access to a pool, restaurant, and garden, a popular place to relax after a day out on the water.

Every morning, a generous breakfast buffet is served before the day's fishing. During the fishing days, lunch, snacks, fresh fruit, and drinks are included and brought onto the boat, so you can fully focus on fishing throughout the day.

Dinners are not included in the trip, giving you the freedom to choose from Labuan Bajo's many restaurants. There is a wide selection of both local Indonesian dishes and international options, making it easy to find something suitable after a day of fishing.

The accommodation is a comfortable base during the week and allows you to combine intensive fishing days with relaxation in a pleasant environment.

What fishing gear is needed in Komodo?

Fishing in Komodo places high demands on both equipment and anglers. The strong tidal currents, sharp coral reefs, and the possibility of hooking large Giant Trevally (GT), Dogtooth Tuna, and other strong predatory fish make it important to use equipment adapted for tropical sport fishing.

Popping and stickbait

For popping and stickbait fishing, a rod of PE 8–10 is recommended, along with a spinning reel in size 14000–20000. The reel should be spooled with PE 8–10 braided line and complemented with a strong leader of 130–170 lb fluorocarbon or nylon.

Poppers and stickbaits between 120 and 220 grams cover most fishing situations in Komodo and work well over reef edges, shallow areas, and current channels where Giant Trevally often hunt.

Jigging

For jigging, a rod of PE 4–6 is recommended, along with a powerful spinning or baitcasting reel. A braided line of PE 4–6 and jigs between 120 and 300 grams are a good starting point. The choice of jig weight is adapted to the current strength and the depth being fished.

Terminal Tackle

Don't forget that even the smallest details play a big role. Heavy-duty hooks, split rings, and high-quality swivels are an important part of the equipment. When a large Giant Trevally or Dogtooth Tuna strikes, the entire setup is subjected to extreme stress, and a weak component can be the difference between a landed dream fish and a lost opportunity.
