Fishing in Rodrigues

Rodrigues Island is a well-known destination for dogtooth tuna jigging, offering a demanding but very rewarding big-game fishing experience. Here, you fish both around the island and out on the legendary Hawkins Bank, where the chance to encounter truly large fish is one of the main highlights.

The fishing is constantly adapted to the prevailing conditions. Some mornings begin with trolling to locate active fish, while on other days, the boat is already positioned over hot spots so that jigging can start immediately from the first drift.

During the day, fishing is primarily done by jigging over deep ledges and structures where predatory fish patrol. As evening approaches and the fish often become most active, jigging is also usually the hottest method, especially when targeting large dogtooth tuna.

In addition to dogtooth tuna, species such as yellowfin tuna, sailfish, GT, snapper, grouper, and marlin can be found. The fishing is physically demanding and suits those looking for intense big-game fishing with great variety and the chance of truly heavy fish in the Indian Ocean.

Accommodation on board L'Oiseau des Îles II

L'Oiseau des Îles II is a 53-foot boat built in Mauritius with a proven design for Indian Ocean conditions. It combines stability, performance, and comfort to create a safe and functional base during your fishing trip.

Onboard, there's a complete kitchen, a spacious seating area for meals, and three air-conditioned cabins with a total of eight berths. The boat also has a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and both bed linen and towels are included.

On the flybridge, there's a large lounge with ample seating, while the spacious aft deck provides room for up to five anglers simultaneously. It also features a fighting chair and plenty of space for battling larger fish.

The food onboard is of high quality, with a mix of local dishes and international favorites. Fresh fruit and fish are recurring features, and sometimes the crew offers carpaccio of freshly caught tuna for lunch. Water, soft drinks, juice, and alcoholic beverages are included during your time onboard.

Gear and bait

On Rodrigues Island, speed jigging is one of the most effective methods, and a large part of the fishing revolves around hunting predatory fish along deep drops, underwater mountains, and current-swept areas in the open ocean. Here, you have the opportunity to catch species such as dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, giant trevally (GT), amberjack, grouper, and coral trout.

Speed jigs between 200 and 400 grams are standard depending on depth, current, and drift. It is important to bring jigs of various shapes and weights to adapt your fishing to the conditions. Short and wider jigs with a lot of action can work well when the fish are more selective, while slimmer and faster-moving jigs often work better when predatory fish are active.

When it comes to equipment, heavy jigging combos are standard. For heavier fishing targeting large dogtooth tuna, rods paired with reels in sizes 10,000–20,000 are most common, preferably models with a low gear ratio that provide better power for heavy jigging and when larger fish need to be brought up from the depths. Lines in PE8–PE10 are often used for the heaviest setups, offering both strength and security when truly large fish strike.

For lighter jigging and smaller species, a more balanced setup with PE6 works very well, which also makes the fishing less physically demanding during long days at sea.

Varying between different jigs is often key to finding what works best on any given day. Colors like blue/silver, glow, pink, and natural baitfish patterns are proven favorites depending on depth and light conditions.

When fishing for large dogtooth tuna, much revolves around tempo and technique. Fast reeling stops combined with powerful lifts often trigger strikes, which can come brutally and without warning. It is a physical type of fishing where both equipment and angler are tested, but also fishing that can offer some of the hardest fights one can experience during a tropical fishing trip.

Before a fishing trip to Rodrigues

What fish species can be caught in Rodrigues?

Dogtooth tuna is the focus, but the variety is great. You also have the chance to catch yellowfin tuna, GT, amberjack, grouper, coral trout, snapper, sailfish, and marlin. What bites depends on the season, depth, and how the fishing is set up for the day.

When is the best time for a fishing trip to Rodrigues?

The fishing is good all year round and is rarely affected by the rainy season. If you want to maximize your chances of catching the big species, the high season is roughly November to May. Our fixed departures are planned according to when the fishing is usually at its best.

How do you fish on Rodrigues?

Jigging is the most common method, especially speed jigging along deep edges and underwater mountains. Trolling is often used in the mornings to locate active fish, and dead bait can also yield catches. Jigging is usually hottest towards evening when predatory fish become active.

How physically demanding is the fishing?

It's heavy-duty fishing. Speed jigging with 200 to 400 gram jigs over long days is demanding, and a large dogtooth tuna tests both you and your equipment. You don't need to be an elite athlete, but basic fitness makes the trip more enjoyable. If you want to wind down, the day can be broken up with trolling.

Is the trip suitable for beginners?

This is a demanding sea fishing experience that best suits those with some experience and who are looking for tough fights. You don't need to have jigged before; the guides will help you with techniques on site, but be prepared for it to be a physically demanding and intense fishing trip rather than a calm beginner's trip.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

Trolling equipment is included. Jigging equipment can be rented from us upon request, or you can bring your own. We are happy to help you with a packing list and the right setup before departure, contact Douglas and he will guide you.

Where will we be staying during the trip?

You will stay partly in a hotel on the island, and partly aboard the liveaboard L'Oiseau des Îles II during the days spent at Hawkins Bank. Onboard there are air-conditioned cabins, shower and toilet, and the food is of high quality with both local dishes and fresh fish. Bed linen and towels are included.

Is there Wi-Fi on site?

Yes, there is Starlink on board the boat.

How do I get to Rodrigues?

You fly from Stockholm, Oslo or Copenhagen to Rodrigues, usually via Mauritius. Return flights and airport transfers are included in the price of the trip.

Do I need a visa for Mauritius?

As a Swedish citizen, you do not need a visa for tourist trips up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return journey and have at least two blank pages for stamps.

Can I customize my fishing trip?

Absolutely, we tailor many of our trips based on when you want to travel, for how long, and how many people you are. The fixed departures are our standard trips, which we primarily base our planning on. Contact us with your preferences, and we will put together your package.
