Fish species and season in Costa Rica
This fishing trip to Drake Bay in Costa Rica offers varied fishing, from roosterfish along the coast to marlin, sailfish, and tuna offshore. Here are some of the species you can fish for.
Marlin
Marlin is the top predator in Drake Bay with three species: blue, black, and striped. Blue marlin around 90 to 140 kilos are most common, and fishing is catch and release.
Season: December to April
Sailfish
Sailfish are known for their jumps, speed, and intense fights. During peak periods, you can have many hookups per day with fish up to 60 to 70 kilos.
Season: December to March
Mahi mahi
A fast and aggressive species fished offshore. Popular as both a sport fish and a food fish.
Season: varies, but strong for much of the year
Tuna
Yellowfin, bigeye, and albacore are found year-round. Fishing with poppers near schooling fish provides explosive strikes and high activity.

Roosterfish
An iconic coastal species in Costa Rica. In Drake Bay, there's a chance for large fish over 20 kilos. Fished close to shore and released in most cases.

Wahoo
One of the fastest predatory fish in the area. Primarily caught by trolling and known for its explosive runs.

Snapper and grouper
Powerful bottom fish that live near reefs and structures. Here you'll find cubera snapper, among others, known for their brutal strikes and heavy fights.
